Siegmund Fischel

Siegmund Fischel (born March 16, 1909 in Hanover ; † March 18, 1972 ibid) was chairman of the regional association of the Jewish communities of Lower Saxony and the Jewish community in Hanover .

Life

Fischel came from an old Hanoverian Jewish family. In the era of National Socialism both parents were murdered. He himself was a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp , returned to his hometown after the liberation and opened a dental practice with his wife Lola in Groß-Buchholz. In Hanover he participated in the reconstruction of the Jewish community and in 1962 became chairman of the regional association of the Jewish communities of Lower Saxony and the Jewish community of Hanover. The construction of the synagogue , the old people's home and the Jewish cultural center on Haeckelstrasse were built on his initiative . He was the founder of the Association of Former Hanoverians in Israel. For a time he was a member of the board of directors of the Central Council of Jews in Germany . Fischel was awarded the Lower Saxony Order of Merit in 1969. He died of a heart attack and was buried in the Jewish community cemetery in Hanover-Bothfeld .
