Sir Wallace Edward Rowling (* 15. November 1927 in Motueka , † 31 October 1995 in Nelson ), better known as Bill Rowling , was a New Zealand politician of the Labor Party and prime minister from 1974 to 1975.

Rowling was born into a farming family in Motueka, near Nelson. He attended the well-known Nelson College and then studied at the University of Canterbury . There he completed an economics degree and then trained as a teacher at the Christchurch College of Education . He taught at various schools in the country before joining the army in 1958 . There he became deputy director for training. He spent some time in Malaysia and Singapore .

Act as a politician

Rowling ran for a seat in parliament for the first time in the 1960s election. In the constituency of Fendalton in Christchurch , a stronghold of the National Party , he was defeated by Harry Lake.

In 1962 he took over the seat of the late Jerry Skinner , which he held until the 1972 election. After the Labor Party victory in 1972, he became Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Norman Kirk . When Kirk died unexpectedly in 1974, Rowling succeeded him.

During his tenure he was exposed to strong criticism from the opposition. He was portrayed as weak and ineffective. The Labor Party was clearly defeated in the 1975 election, also because of Rowling's poor image and because of the outstanding media impact of his rival Robert Muldoon .

Rowlings remained party chairman and even won the most votes in the 1978 and 1981 elections. The majority of the seats remained with the National Party. He managed to improve his negative image. Nevertheless, he was replaced by David Lange before the 1982 election and also withdrew from parliament.

Between 1985 and 1988 he was ambassador to the USA , during which time there was a dispute over the ANZUS agreement between the two countries. Back in New Zealand he was involved, among other things, with the Museum of New Zealand .

Honors

He was a member of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and the Orde van Oranje-Nassau in the Netherlands .
