The University of Canterbury , in Māori : Te Whare Wānanga O Waitaha , is located in Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand . It is considered the second oldest university in the country.

geography

The main building and core of the university campus is located approximately 4 km west of Christchurch city ​​center , between Riccarton to the south and Burnside to the north. The campus grounds are 1.2 miles east-west from Clyde Road to Solway Avenue and up to 0.5 miles north-south at its widest.

history

The University of Canterbury was founded on June 16, 1873 under the name Canterbury College as the second university in the country and funded by the then Canterbury Provincial Council . A year later the first lectures began and in 1875 the first graduations. Julius von Haast , geologist and naturalist teaches at the college and was appointed professor of geology and palaeontology there in 1876. In 1880, Helen Connon, the first woman to complete her studies at the college , and in 1894, Apirana Ngata, the first student of Māori origin to graduate.

The School of Art opened in 1882, the Arts, Science, Commerce & Law and Mental, Moral & Social Sciences faculties in 1921 , and the Music Faculty followed in 1924. In 1933, Canterbury College was renamed Canterbury University College, and in 1957 it was renamed University of Canterbury , as the university is still called today.

In 1975 the university completed its move from the city center, where it had resided for over 100 years, to today's 76-hectare campus in the Ilam district .

Coat of Arms

The University's Coat of Arms was already established when it was founded and can still be seen in its original form on the bell tower of the Arts Center. When the university became independent in 1961, the coat of arms was redesigned and authorized by the Krone on May 10, 1965 with a letters patent .

and in over 50 departments.

University data

In 2016 the university had 15,564 students, of whom 12,492 were studying full-time. 715 academic teachers were available for their training.

The university reached its highest level of enrolled students in 2010 with 18,783 students and 15,494 full-time students. After the Darfield earthquake in 2010, which also affected the university's infrastructure, only 16,444 students enrolled in the following year, 13,604 of them full-time, which meant a decrease in the number of students of 12.45%. The Christchurch earthquake of February 2011 also had similar consequences for university operations, with the number of students falling again to 15,798 students in 2012 and to 14,872 students in 2013, which is a quake-related decrease in enrollments of 20.82% year-on-year before the earthquake meant. Since 2016, the number of students has increased again slightly by 4.9%.
