The University of Waikato , in its full name The University of Waikato ( Maori : Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato ), is a university in New Zealand . It is located in Hamilton , the capital of the Waikato region , and has a branch in Tauranga . It was founded in 1964. The Faculty of Māori Studies is unique in the world.

In 2011, around 13,000 people studied at the university , including 2,299 Māori and around 2,500 non-New Zealand students. This makes it the university with the highest number of Māori students.
