Nelson College

The Nelson College is a school in Nelson , New Zealand . It is New Zealand's oldest public school. Since it was founded in 1856, only boys have been able to attend school, although there is extensive cooperation with the Nelson College for Girls . The school also includes a boarding school, which today provides training in particular for many students from the Asian region.

Due to its high academic level, Nelson College is highly regarded in Oceania and large parts of Asia. The school is attended by around 1,100 students from 60 nations who are divided into 8 houses. The alumni are organized as part of Nelson College Old Boys.

Well-known alumni include Nobel Laureate Ernest Rutherford , New Zealand Prime Ministers Bill Rowling and Geoffrey Palmer , Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon , Olympic sailing champion Rex Sellers, and numerous board members of large New Zealand and American companies. The school also gained a lot of attention for hosting the first rugby match in New Zealand on March 14, 1870.
