The Richard-Strauss-Brunnen (also Salome-Brunnen ) is located in the Munich pedestrian zone in front of the Alte Akademie (until May 2012 Bavarian State Office for Statistics and Data Processing ). It forms a flowing conclusion on the western side of the plaza-like area between the Old Academy and the Michaelskirche . Opposite on the south side was the house where Richard Strauss was born ; The Josef-Pschorr-Haus has stood there since autumn 2013 (before that until March 2010, the Karstadt Haus Oberpollinger am Dom ).
The fountain was created by Hans Wimmer in 1962 in honor of the famous son of the city Richard Strauss and contains scenes from the opera Salome. Based on the ancient theme, the fountain was designed as a column.
history
Around 13 years after the death of Richard Strauss, the famous composer and conductor was erected in front of the Old Academy in the form of this bronze fountain. The fountain was donated by the state capital Munich, and the artist was responsible for its execution.
Current
Since 2012, the traditional nativity market has been taking place around the fountain during Advent . The Munich Christkindlmarkt follows in the direction of Marienplatz . The Christmas markets in Munich's pedestrian zone are open daily and close on December 24th ( Christmas Eve ).
architecture
It was a difficult task for Hans Wimmer to put a modern fountain in front of the Renaissance facades of the surrounding buildings. For this he chose the Roman statue as the form, which both picks up on the ancient Salome theme and integrates harmoniously into the building (Renaissance as the rebirth of antiquity). At the top, the fountain is closed off by a flat plate, from which the water falls down the fountain like a stage curtain.
