David Richard Cunliffe (born April 30, 1963 in Te Aroha , New Zealand ) is a politician with the New Zealand Labor Party . He was their party leader from September 2013 to September 2014.

Life

David Richard Cunliffe was born on April 30, 1963 as the first son of Pastor William Richard Cunliffe and his wife Barbara Mary Tuke in Te Aroha in the Waikato region. His brother was born two years later. In 1967 the family moved to Te Kuiti and later to Pleasant Point in the South Island , where Cunliffe attended Pleasant Point High School and his father joined the Labor Party in the 1970s.

In 1982 Cunliffe graduated from the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales with an international baccalaureate , followed by a bachelor's degree from the University of Otago , where he studied in 1986. In 1993 he graduated from Massey University with a degree in economics , followed by a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University , where he was enrolled as a student from 1994 to 1995.

Between 1987 and 1994 he worked as a diplomat for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington , Canberra , in the South Pacific and in Washington, DC . From 1995 to 1999 he worked as a business strategy adviser in the Boston Consulting Group company in Auckland and for a short time as a community worker in the Glen Eden district of the former city of Waitakere City, now Auckland.

Time in parliament

Cunliffe won the constituency of Titirangi , a district of Waitakere City, on November 27, 1999 , and thus moved into the New Zealand Parliament for the first time for the New Zealand Labor Party . In 2002 he ran for the constituency of New Lynn , also part of Waitakere City, and held the constituency until his resignation in April 2017.

Under the Helen Clark administration , Cunliffe held various ministerial offices :

  • Dec 2004 - Nov 2007 - Minister for Information Technology
  • Dec 2004 - Dec 2008 - Minister for Communications
  • Nov 2005 - Nov 2007 - Minister for Immigration
  • Nov 2007 - Nov 2008 - Minister for Communication and Information Technology
  • Nov 2007 - Nov 2008 - Minister for Health

There were also several positions as associate minister and as spokesman for his party on various topics.

On September 16, 2013, Cunliffe took on the role of the party leader of his party and the leadership of the opposition in parliament, a responsibility that he was only able to assume for one year and with effect from September 27, 2014 as opposition leader and on September 30, 2014 as party leader resigned.

In February 2020, Cunliffe} was appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Christian Selwyn Foundation in New Zealand.
