The United World College of the Atlantic ( Atlantic College for short ) is the oldest of now seventeen United World Colleges , a group of schools that teach tolerance and social responsibility through international education and social commitment. Sixteen to eighteen year old students from around 80 nations take the International Baccalaureate after two years of school .

history

In 1956 Kurt Hahn (including founder of the schools in Salem and Gordonstoun ) was invited to speak at the NATO Defense College. There he experienced the cooperation and friendship of people from countries that had recently been enemies in World War II . Hahn came up with the idea of bringing young people together in a similar way in order to overcome the hostility of the Cold War . The young people should be old enough to be rooted in their respective cultures, but still open to new ideas. Students from all countries should be selected on the basis of their academic performance, social engagement and personal achievement and regardless of financial means or their respective social, political, cultural, religious and ethnic background.

Funded by generous donations (u. A. By the French businessman Antonin Besse ) and inspired by Hahn's ideas succeeded in 1960 a group led by Rear Admiral Desmond Hoare and Air Marshal Sir Lawrance Darvall , the St. Donat's Castle , a castle in Wales to acquire and there To open the Atlantic College in 1962 and to operate it according to Hahn's concepts.

Atlantic College was one of the first seven schools in the world in 1968 and the first in the UK to follow an international curriculum. In 1971 Atlantic College was the first school in the world to introduce the International Baccalaureate as a sole degree. At the college, new subjects such as environmental systems, world religion or peace and conflict studies were and are being developed.

Atlantic class 21 lifeboat

Atlantic College has been a major driver in the development of voluntary emergency services in the UK. In 1963 one of the first nine coastal lifeboat stations (ILB stations) of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was opened at Atlantic College. The lifeboats were and still are manned by teachers and students from the college. Under the direction of the then headmaster Rear Admiral Desmond Hoare, fast lifeboats were developed for use near the coast. The designation of today's RNLI lifeboats (B class Atlantic) reflects this contribution to development. The RNLI's first female captain was also a student at Atlantic College.

Location and campus

View of the castle

The school is located on the Welsh Atlantic coast, a half hour drive from Cardiff . The heart of the college is St. Donat's Castle , built in the 12th century . On the 60 hectare campus are u. a. seven boarding school buildings, in which 40 young people from different countries live and learn together, supervised by "houseparents".

School concept

The majority of Atlantic College students are scholarship holders who are selected by their respective national committees on the basis of demonstrated social commitment, openness to other cultures and academic achievement. The academic level is high and the graduate's International Baccalaureate exam results are regularly well above the international average.

As at all United World Colleges, great importance is attached to extracurricular engagement, intercultural understanding and social responsibility, be it in one of the compulsory services (typical for Atlantic College are its three sea rescue services) or in the multitude of activities carried out by the students be organized by yourself. Many graduates have a lifelong bond with Atlantic College.
