introduction

The Mahindra UWC was founded in 1997 with the financial support of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited as the tenth of the United World Colleges. The aim was to combine a "world-class" education with the ideals of intercultural and international understanding and the pursuit of a more peaceful world, which are part of the educational philosophy of all United World Colleges. The 70 hectare property is located on a ridge on the Mulla River approx. 40 km west of the district capital Pune.

student

The MUWCI brings together students from over 60 nations with their respective cultural and religious backgrounds and from different social backgrounds. These are selected by a worldwide system of around 180 national committees. The candidates are selected exclusively on the basis of their personal suitability and motivation, regardless of their financial background, and usually receive scholarships.

International and intercultural education

The students live, learn and spend their free time together. Everyday coexistence leaves no room for artificial boundaries that can arise from religion, social origin, gender or nationality. As part of a comprehensive education, students are encouraged to take specific social or sustainable development initiatives. In addition, all students support activities in the neighborhood and thus make a concrete contribution to development.

The college includes teachers from Argentina, Australia, Germany, Ecuador, France, Great Britain, India, Italy, Japan, Cameroon, Canada, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, South Africa and the USA who are based on live on campus. The teacher-student ratio is 1: 9.

Campus and facilities

The campus consists of classrooms including a library, computer room, modern laboratories and workshops, public buildings and accommodation for teachers and students. These four so-called "wadas" each have their own characteristics. Sports facilities include a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball, volleyball, football and cricket fields and a small gym. The successful mixture of modern architecture and local materials by the architect Christopher Charles Benninger has received several awards, for example: B. 2000 with the American Institute of Architects / Business Week / Architectural Record Award for excellence or 2001 with the Aga Khan Award for Architecture .

social commitment

In addition to their regular artistic and sporting activities, all students are involved in community services in the area and community service in the college. The "community service" program includes e.g. B. Help in orphanages and homes for the disabled, support for the elderly in Pune and other neighboring villages, literature and English lessons for children and adults as well as the construction of schools in the area.

All students take an introductory course in Hindi in order to be prepared for the activities in the area.
