The United World College Red Cross Nordic (UWCRCN) (formerly: Red Cross Nordic United World College) is one of currently 17 United World Colleges . It was founded in 1995 as the ninth United World College under the auspices of Queen Sonjas of Norway .

Focus

The school has three main focuses: Nordic, Environment and Humanitarian. Every student is required to engage in these aspects during their college years in the CAS program. In addition, so-called Global Concerns Days, organized by students, take place on all focal points.

Red Cross

The college is named after its partnership with the Red Cross . The college is in the immediate vicinity of the Haugland Rehabilitation Center , which is part of the Red Cross of the Sogn og Fjordane province . All students of the college complete first aid training as part of a project week and have the opportunity to help out at camps and campaigns of the Red Cross and, for example, to take courses on psychosocial emergency care . In addition, volunteers from the Red Cross work on campus.

Student body

Around 200 students from more than 80 countries live and learn in the college, including students from SOS Children's Villages , students with physical disabilities and refugees.

Students are selected by more than 155 national selection committees worldwide on the basis of their personal suitability, regardless of their political beliefs, religion or social status. A large number are supported by scholarships, so the financial background of the families does not affect the selection. Around a third of Nordic students are represented in the student body, with Norwegians making up the largest proportion, but Swedes, Danes, Finns, Icelanders, Greenlanders and Faroe Islands are also represented each year.

campus

UWC RCN is located on the west coast of Norway near the village of Flekke, approximately 150 km north of the city of Bergen and 40 km west of Førde . The college is in the immediate vicinity of the Haugland Rehabilitation Center of the Red Cross. Both institutions work closely together and share a variety of facilities such as swimming pools, a fitness center and a sports hall.

The students are accommodated in the so-called Student Village. The five houses, each with space for 40 students, are named after Nordic countries: Finland House, Denmark House, Norway House, Iceland House and Sweden House. Usually five students of different origins share a room with a bathroom.

In addition, the campus houses:

  • three teaching buildings
  • Reception and administration building
  • Leif Høegh Center
  • Quiet house
  • Bakehouse
  • Boothaus (also houses a music room)
  • Canteen building (also houses the auditorium, a library and a bouldering room)
  • two UWC-Connect buildings
  • Football / sports field
  • two islands

The campus is designed to be completely barrier-free in order to give wheelchair-dependent students access to all rooms. Due to the location directly on the fjord and mountains, hikes, kayak tours, climbing, archery and other outdoor activities can be carried out directly from the campus.

Academic

The two-year boarding period ends with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, an international university entrance qualification.

Following the IB Diploma Program, for example, the following subjects were offered in the 2018/2019 school year:

  • Subject group 1 (Studies in language and literature)
    • English language and literature, English / Spanish / Norwegian / Swedish / Danish literature, "world literature" (literature in one's mother tongue, "self-taught")
  • Subject group 2 (Language acquisition)
    • Chinese ab initio, Spanish ab initio, English B, Norwegian B, another subject from subject group 1
  • Subject group 3 (Individuals and societies)
    • “Environmental Systems and Societies”, geography, history, philosophy, politics (global politics), economics
  • Subject group 4 (Sciences)
    • Biology, chemistry, "Environmental Systems and Societies", physics
  • Subject group 5 (Mathematics)
    • “Mathematical Studies”, mathematics
  • Subject group 6 (The arts)
    • Visual art, theater, another subject from subject groups 1 to 4

Each student must choose a subject from each subject group and take at least three subjects at the higher level and the rest at the basic level.

The college does not only focus on academic achievement, but seeks a balance between teaching, social services and leisure activities. The aim of the United World Colleges is to make “education a force that connects people, nations and cultures in the pursuit of peace and a sustainable future”.

The college is largely funded by the Norwegian government. It is also supported by the other Nordic countries and private sponsors.
