In 1959 she met the then Crown Prince Harald of Norway. It took nine years before the Crown Prince got his father's approval to marry the bourgeois Sonja Haraldsen. Harald threatened to remain single forever. Since he was the only male heir to the throne, the succession would have been seriously jeopardized. After consultations with the government, the engagement was finally celebrated in March 1968. There was little popular resistance to a bourgeois crown princess.
On August 29, 1968, the couple married in Oslo Cathedral . They have two children together:
- Princess Märtha Louise (* 1971)
- Crown Prince Haakon (* 1973)
She also had two miscarriages (1970 and 1972).
The queen is now a grandmother five times. Their son Haakon and his wife Mette-Marit have two children together, Ingrid Alexandra von Norway (* 2004) and Sverre Magnus (* 2005). Sonja's daughter Märtha Louise has three children, Maud Angelica Behn (* 2003), Leah Isadora Behn (* 2005) and Emma Tallulah Behn (* 2008). The Queen is the godmother of her grandchildren Leah Isadora Behn and Sverre.

After the death of her father-in-law, widowed for decades, on January 17, 1991, Sonja became the first Norwegian queen in 53 years. She assists her husband, King Harald V, in fulfilling his representative duties. She has been an art enthusiast and collector since her early teens. Sonja is known for her modern and convention-free taste. Her private art collection was successfully exhibited in Oslo in 2002. She was also involved in the total renovation and the art-historical reconstruction of the royal palace of Oslo . As a sporting activity, the Queen goes skiing.
