Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway , full name Haakon Magnus of Norway , (born July 20, 1973 in Oslo ) is a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg , a branch of the House of Oldenburg . He is the current Norwegian heir to the throne and is married to Crown Princess Mette-Marit .

Haakon is the son of King Harald V of Norway and Queen Sonja and was baptized on September 20, 1973 by Oslo's then Bishop Kåre Støylen in the Oslo Castle Chapel. From 1980 he attended a school in Smestad . From 1992 he attended the upper level of the Christian Gymnasium (Kristelig Gymnasium) in Oslo, which he completed with the higher education entrance qualification. The Crown Prince completed his military service in the Norwegian Navy . From 1996 he studied political science in the USA at the University of Berkeley in California, where he completed his bachelor's degree. From 1999 he studied law at the University of Oslo . After his marriage to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby on August 25, 2001 in Oslo Cathedral , he lived in London from 2002 to 2003 , where he completed his master's degree in international politics at the renowned London School of Economics .

On August 25, 2001, Haakon married the commoner Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, who brought their son Marius Borg Høiby (born January 13, 1997) into the marriage, who comes from a previous relationship with Morten Borg. The Crown Prince couple still have two children together:

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway (born January 21, 2004 in Oslo) was baptized on April 17, 2004 in Oslo. Her godparents are King Harald V of Norway, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark , Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden , and King Felipe VI. of Spain , Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and her grandmother Marit Tjessem. She takes second place behind her father in the Norwegian line of succession .

Prince Sverre Magnus of Norway (born December 3, 2005 in Oslo) was baptized on March 4, 2006 in Oslo. His godparents are Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands , Crown Prince Paul of Greece , Princess Rosario of Bulgaria, Espen Høiby, Bjørn Stensland and Marianne Gjellestad. Unlike his sister, Prince Sverre Magnus does not have the title " Royal Highness", but "Highness". However, he is third in line to the Norwegian throne after his father and sister .

As the great-great-grandson of Edward VII , Haakon is listed in the line of succession in the United Kingdom (73rd in August 2013). He is followed by his son Sverre Magnus (74th place at the time) and his daughter Ingrid Alexandra (75th place at the time).

Crown Prince Haakon lives with his family on the royal estate of Skaugum in Asker , a rural suburb of Oslo, where he spent his childhood.

Tasks and interests

Prince Haakon has been a Goodwill Ambassador within the United Nations Development Program since 2003 . In this role he traveled to Tanzania , Cambodia , Sierra Leone and Guatemala .

In the years 2003 to 2005 King Harald V had to have two major medical interventions. During this time, the Crown Prince took over the duties of Head of State of Norway until the King could resume his duties.
