Sophia Wilhelmine Marianne Henriette von Nassau (born July 9, 1836 in Biebrich Castle , Wiesbaden-Biebrich ; † December 30, 1913 in Stockholm Castle , Stockholm ) was the daughter of Duke Wilhelm I of Nassau . Through her marriage on June 6, 1857 to the later King Oskar II of Sweden , she became Queen of Sweden and Queen of Norway on May 12, 1873 .

Life

Sophia was born as the youngest of twelve descendants of Duke Wilhelm von Nassau in Biebrich Castle near Wiesbaden . Her mother was Pauline von Württemberg (* February 25, 1810 - July 7, 1856), daughter of Prince Paul of Württemberg , with whom Duke Wilhelm I of Nassau had been married since April 23, 1829. When Sophia was just three years old, her father died of a stroke during the cure in Bad Kissingen . Her half-brother Adolf , who was 19 years her senior and later became the Grand Duke of Luxembourg , became Duke of Nassau .

Marriage and offspring

On June 6, 1857, Sophia married Prince Oskar of Sweden , third eldest son of the Swedish King Oskar I and his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais, Duchess of Leuchtenberg, at Biebrich Castle .

Appreciation

In Bad Honnef , where the Swedish royal couple owned and cured a summer residence, a "Königin-Sophie-Strasse" commemorates Sophia von Nassau today.
