Pauline Friederike Marie von Württemberg (born February 25, 1810 in Stuttgart , † July 7, 1856 in Wiesbaden ) was a princess of Württemberg and by marriage Duchess of Nassau.

Life

Pauline was a daughter of Prince Paul von Württemberg and his wife Princess Charlotte von Sachsen-Hildburghausen . Pauline was hard of hearing from her youth.

She married Duke Wilhelm I of Nassau on April 23, 1829 in Stuttgart . Her husband was 18 years older than Pauline and was first married to her aunt Luise von Sachsen-Hildburghausen , with whom he already had eight children. The marriage was unhappy, Wilhelm terrorized his family and made fun of his wife's hearing loss. She later published her life story under the title "My story of suffering".

The duchess was considered popular and benevolent among the population. In 1857 she founded a girls' hostel, the so-called "Nassauische Diakonissen-Mutterhaus Paulinenstiftung". The two hospitals emerged from this in 1896 and were later renamed Paulinenstift Wiesbaden (today Asklepios Paulinen Klinik Wiesbaden ) and Paulinenstift Nastätten . The Duchess was considered a difficult character in the internal circle; a contemporary witness describes her: "Your Highness is and remains completely indifferent to any consideration that does not suit your own view and insight."

The Paulinenschlösschen in Wiesbaden was built for Pauline from 1841 to 1843 as a widow's residence, but it was destroyed in 1945. She commissioned a castle of the same name in Bad Soden am Taunus in 1847 and sold it to the spa doctor Georg Thilenius in 1855 .
