Riudoms is a municipality in southern Catalonia . It has 6594 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and is located in the province of Tarragona and the Comarca Baix Camp . Of Reus , the capital of the Comarca , it is about 5 km away. Riudoms is the birthplace of the architect Antoni Gaudí .

history

Archaeological finds show that the area of Riudoms was inhabited as early as the Neolithic and later in the Bronze Age. In Roman times there were several settlements in the area of the present municipality, particularly near the Maspujols River . The official foundation of Riudoms took place on January 25, 1151. The knight Arnau de Palomar received the area of Riodoms from the Norman prince Robert d'Aguiló with the condition that a castle be built here.

economy

Riudoms was traditionally characterized by agriculture. The hazelnut has been the main product since the end of the 19th century. When the demand later fell, they switched to growing olives. Nowadays, most of the residents only farm as a sideline.
