Capafonts is a mountain village in Catalonia in the Baix Camp region , known for its forests and crystal waters.

location

The village is 36 km from Reus and 140 km from Barcelona . Near the village is the city of Salou and the PortAventura theme park .

history

From the founding of the village up to the 20th century, Capafonts had a feudal system: first it was owned by the Counts of Prades and later by the estate and large estate owners. They also owned the entire village and the associated territory.

Early days

The human presence in the Capafonts Valley dates back to the Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic , as suggested by some caves and fossil finds in the area. The population who lived in the Capafonts between the Neolithic and Bronze Ages were likely nomadic people who settled there.

Antiquity

Finds from ancient times suggest that humans were also present at this time. Such finds are, for example, ceramic remains and early Iberian coins from the 2nd century AD as well as the remains of a Roman city. Apparently the Visigoths were later also present in this area .

Early Middle Ages

In the 11th century, the political administration of Capafont was in Siurana . Capafonts was the place of refuge for persecuted Christians who settled there until 1159. From 1151 the political administration of the village was transferred to Barcelona; The name Capafontes appears for the first time in the document . This situation came to an end in 1324 when the County of Padres was founded by James II for the benefit of his only son, Alfonso IV .

Late Middle Ages

In 1425 the County of Cardona took over the government of the village, at the end of the 16th century the Duchy of Medinaceli and later to the Duchy of Feria .

Modern

The history of Capafont at this time hardly differs from the history of the wider area.

In 1860 Capafonts had the greatest population density since it was founded. At that time Capafonts had 532, in 1900 422 and 1950 292 inhabitants.

economy

Agriculture has been the dominant sector throughout history, which can be explained by vegetation. The forests in the area provided enough food (herbs, hunting and fishing).

tourism

The biggest tourist attractions are the forests and the crystal waters of Capafont, as well as the church La iglesia de Santa Maria , also called Mare de Deu de Barrulles .

Manners

The biggest festival is celebrated on August 15th.

Capafonts preserves the culinary traditions. The thyme soups, mandongos and orrelletes are particularly worth mentioning .
