Geographical location

Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet is located about 30 kilometers southwest of Tarragona on the Mediterranean coast .

history

Stone Age paintings have been found in various caves within the district .

The current suburb of Vandellòs was mentioned as early as 1342 as Vallis Laurorumi and in 1460 as Vall de Llore . It belonged first to the dominion of the city of Tivissa and from 1324 to the county of Prades. In 1813 the troops of Napoleon's Marshal Suchet conquered and sacked the city. In 1835 it suffered further severe damage from an earthquake.

L'Hospitalet was founded on November 8, 1344 by the Infante Peter of Aragón and Anjou ( catal . : Pere d'Aragó i d'Anjou ), a son of Jacob II ( Jaume el Just ). Peter had a mighty square building with 54.5 m sides and four corner towers, each 18.5 m high, erected, the Hospital del Coll de Balaguer . The repopulation of the coastal strip that he sought did not succeed until 1362, when his son Joan de Prades acquired additional land for the hospital . The building was destroyed in the 15th century.

economy

For a long time agriculture formed the economic basis of the city. This changed with the construction of the Vandellòs nuclear power station in 1972. Today hazelnuts , almonds and cereals are still grown.

Tourism has become one of the city's main sources of income. Numerous hotels and holiday homes were built. In L'Hospitalet there is a sports boat harbor with 575 berths.
