The Vandellòs nuclear power plant ( Catalan Central nuclear de Vandellòs , Spanish Central nuclear de Vandellós , CNV for short ) is located near Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant in the province of Tarragona and consists of two blocks.

Block 1

The first block, Vandellòs-1, was a graphite-moderated reactor cooled with carbon dioxide ( UNGG reactor ). This block had an electrical output of 500 MW and was put into operation in 1972. On October 19, 1989, a serious incident occurred there in which the block was irreparably damaged. Repairing the system would have been uneconomical, so on July 31, 1990 it was decided to shut down Unit 1. In 2003 ENRESA decided to approve the second phase of the decommissioning and dismantling project, with which a large part of the facility may be removed. After 30 years of safe containment , when activity has dropped 95 percent, the rest of the facility can be disposed of.

Block 2

Unit 2, Vandellòs-2 is a pressurized water reactor with 2912 MW thermal, 1087 MW electrical output and has been on the grid since 1988. The nuclear power plant is 72 percent owned by Endesa and 28 percent by Iberdrola . A third block was planned, but the project was abandoned on September 2, 1995.

Accidents

On October 10, 2014, both external power grid supplies failed in Unit 2 during power operation. He could no longer deliver electricity and also no longer obtain it from the grid. In order to shut down the reactor for repairs, however, electricity is required, which now had to be supplied by emergency diesel generators at the plant due to the power failure. After an hour and 24 minutes, the power supply was restored and the emergency power failure ended. The incident experienced difficulties due to display failures in the emergency room of the plant.

On February 4, 2015, an incorrect control signal in Unit 2 led to the failure of the main feed water pumps . The reason for the wrong signal should have been strong winds. It was no longer possible to continue operation without the main feed water; the reactor had to be cooled down using the emergency feed water system.
