Adipsia
Adipsia is a medical term for thirst behavior disorders in which the feeling of thirst is absent. If it is less pronounced, it is called hypodipsia . Pathologically increased thirst is called polydipsia .
causes
There are several reasons for a decreased or absent feeling of thirst:
- Lesions of the hypothalamus
- Bleeding from aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery
- Bleeding into the hypothalamus
- Ligation of appropriate aneurysms
Hypodipsia also occurs when:
- Brain tumor
- granulomatous diseases ( sarcoid , tuberculosis , histiocytosis )
- traumatic brain injury
- Hydrocephalus
- natural decrease in thirst with age
- Difficulty swallowing
- gastritis
- Esophagitis
- Stenosis in the esophagus
consequences
Insufficient fluid intake in the body permanently leads to desiccosis , which is particularly common in the elderly. Permanent refusal to drink fluids can lead to dying of thirst .
