The Lemoniz Nuclear Power Plant ( Spanish Central nuclear de Lemoniz ) should consist of two Westinghouse - pressurized water reactors are made and was in 1974 near the town Lemoniz in the Basque Autonomous Community built. The construction was stopped after protests.

history

Construction of the power station began on March 1, 1974 by the private energy company Iberduero , without any prior permission being obtained and without any safety measures being checked. Both blocks would have had a gross output of 930  MW and a net output of 883 MW. The current owner is Iberdrola SA

Three years after the start of construction, but still in the construction stage, the terrorist group ETA attacked the power plant at gunpoint. The chief engineer of the project died when one of the reactors ignited on the roof of the building. A year later, on March 8, 1978, a bomb was detonated in the steam generator room. The bomb killed two workers and injured 14 others. This resulted in damage of two to six million dollars. On June 13, 1979, an ETA bomb was detonated in the turbine hall . It exploded 25 minutes after the bomb warning. One worker was killed and the entire turbine set was destroyed.

After the attacks, the construction of the reactor blocks was finally stopped in 1984. In 2000, the history of the nuclear power plant was thematized by the Basque artist and later documenta participant Ibon Aranberri in the work Lights over Lemoniz .

Data of the reactor blocks
