Life

Ibon Aranberri studied beginning in 1989 at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, interrupted by an Erasmus stay in 1993 at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan . In 1994 he completed his studies in Bilbao with a BA in Art. In 1995 he took part in a course with the Basque artists Ángel Bados (* 1945) and Txomin Badiola (* 1957), which took place at the Centro de Arte Arteleku in San Sebastián . In 1998/99 he was artist in residence at the Center for Contemporary Art in Kitakyūshū (Japan). In 2003/04 he took part in the Art Center Studio Program at PS1 in New York.

The themes of Aranberri's work are often of a political nature and consist of research, subtle interventions on site and the documentation of the interventions in the form of photos and installations from found objects . In his work Lights over Lemoniz (2000–) he planned to organize fireworks at the Lemóniz nuclear power plant . Lemóniz (Basque Lemoiz ) was built under Franco, but never put into operation after local protests and ETA bombings with fatalities. Aranberri was denied the artistic action by the police. In his work he documents the history of the nuclear power plant in a slide show.

Aranberri lives and works in Bilbao .
