The Manifesta is a European biennial for contemporary art , the exhibition locations change every two years. The first Manifesta took place in Rotterdam in 1996. The sponsor is the International Foundation Manifesta .

International Foundation Manifesta

The sponsor of the Biennale is the “International Foundation Manifesta” (IFM), which aims to present local, national and international art with these events at different European locations. At the same time, the biennials are supposed to perform an archive function and stimulate research and discussion on contemporary art. The Foundation was established in 1996, it is an independent non-profit organization and is based in Amsterdam . Hedwig Fijen (* 1961) from the Netherlands heads the Foundation to this day .

The foundation has a supervisory board consisting of experts from science, business and international art and advising the director. The chairman is the Dutch manager Alexander Rinnooy Kan .

Manifesta 7

Manifesta7 opened on July 19, 2008 and was divided into four exhibition locations: Franzensfeste fortress , the former Alumix building in the Bozen industrial zone ( South Tyrol ), the former post office building in Trento and the former tobacco factory, the train station and a former factory in Rovereto ( Trentino ). A total of 188 artists are involved in Manifesta7. Manifesta7 closed on November 2nd, 2008.

Manifesta 8

Manifesta 8 took place for 100 days from October 9, 2010 to January 9, 2011 in the Murcia region and was intended as a dialogue with the art of North Africa . It has been curated by three collectives: Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum , Chamber of Public Secrets, and Tranzit.org .

Manifesta 9

Manifesta 9 took place from June 2 to September 30, 2012 in Genk in the Belgian province of Limburg . The curator was the art critic and historian Cuauhtémoc Medina. He lives and works in Mexico City and has a PhD in art history and theory from the University of Essex, UK. Katerina Gregos and Dawn Ades were co-curators. 100 artists exhibited, including Bernd and Hilla Becher , Max Ernst , Richard Long , Michael Matthys , Henry Moore and Ni Haifeng .

Manifesta 10

Manifesta 10 took place from June 28 to October 31, 2014 in Saint Petersburg , curated by Kasper König . König presented works of contemporary art, which he juxtaposed with older ones from the museum's holdings. The main exhibition location was a new wing of the Hermitage Art Museum .

Manifesta 11

In 2016, the artist Christian Jankowski, as curator , designed the 11th edition of Manifesta under the title What People Do For Money , which took place from June 6 to September 18, 2016 at various locations in Zurich. Thirty residents of the city with different professions each inspired an artist - based on their experiences - to undertake a specific art project.

Manifesta 12

The Manifesta of the year 2018 took place from June 16 to November 4 in the 2018 cultural capital Palermo, Sicily , and was curated by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) from Rotterdam . Under the motto The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence was about topics such as migration, technology and nature.

Manifesta 13

Manifesta 2020 will take place in France for the first time. From June 7th to December 1st 2020, Marseille and the surrounding area will host the exhibitions. A team led by Alya Sebti, the director of the Berlin ifa gallery , Katerina Chuchalina, curator of the VAC Foundation in Moscow and Venice and Stefan Kalmár, director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, is responsible for the program. Its theme is “Traits d'union.s” (the French word for hyphens ) and wants to try to create “new solidarity ties”.
