Alexander Rinnooy Kan

Alexander Hendrik George Rinnooy Kan (born October 5, 1949 in The Hague ) is a Dutch mathematician and manager.

Rinnooy Kan grew up in The Hague and studied at the University of Leiden and the University of Amsterdam (Bachelor degree in Econometrics 1972). He then went to Delft University of Technology and received his doctorate in 1976 from Gijsbert de Leve at the University of Amsterdam (Machine scheduling problems: classification, complexity and computations). From 1977 he was at the Erasmus University Rotterdam , where he became Professor of Operations Research in 1980 and Director of the Institute for Econometrics in 1983. In 1986 he was rector of the university. He has been Professor of Economics at the University of Amsterdam since 2012.

In 1986 he received the EURO gold medal from the European Association for Operations Research Societies .

Among other things, he was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley , in Brussels, at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

From 1991 to 1996 he was president of the Dutch employers' association VNO and VNO-NCW. From 1996 to 2006 he was on the board of ING responsible for Asia. From 2006 to 2012 he was President of the Sociaal-Economische Raad (SER), which advises the Dutch parliament on social and economic issues.

He is in command of the Order of the Dutch Lions.

He is on the Council of the Concertgebouw , the Amsterdam Cultural Center De Balie and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds. He is a member of the Democrats 66 party and the innovation platform. Rinnooy Kan is an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels.

In 2007, 2008 and 2009 he was voted the most influential Dutchman by the daily Volkskrant .
