Kim Ryŏ-ryŏng (* 1971 in Seoul ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Kim Ryŏ-ryŏng was born in Seoul in 1971. She grew up with her maternal grandmother as well as with her paternal great-grandmother in Seoul and Taejŏn , which strongly influenced her. In her childhood, which she spent in a small village, her dream was to become a teacher or a police officer as she was fascinated by her own teacher who seemed to know everything and did everything for her. Her desire to drive in a police car was so great that she even pretended that she didn't know the way home. The policeman at the police station gave Kim and her friends something to eat, patiently listened to their story, and drove them home in the police car. This particular experience seemed to inspire Kim to portray selfless adults as characters who unreservedly listen to young people, such as: B. the security guard in Have you seen him before? (그 사람 을 본 적이 있나요), Uncle Oh in The Elegant Lie (우아한 거짓말) and the Mister Director in Wandŭk (완득 이).

Kim watched a film from Hong Kong while she was in high school, and shortly afterwards she and her friends enrolled in a kung fu combat school. This tick lasted for about a year, but the experiences she made there helped her to write her bestseller Wandŭk , which, among other things, is about a kickboxing school. In this story, Kim depicts the behavior and psychological state of a young person so realistically that some readers had the feeling that a seventeen-year-old boy lived in the author's heart. The fact that the friendship with her comrades from the kung fu school, who later became teachers in kickboxing, continued, helped her with her writing.

Her wish was to study literature, but she had to grow up, get married and have two children before this wish was fulfilled when she was over thirty. She attended the Creative Writing Department of the Seoul Art Institute. She started her career as a writer relatively late, but wrote all the more unreservedly. After giving birth to two children, there was nothing to scare her, and at thirty-five nothing shocked her either. Kim had a habit of taking notes whenever she heard strange dialogue or encountered someone who was acting suspiciously. This habit became a useful late-career starter tool. Unlike other children's stories, their stories always feature a large number of characters who have distinctive and unique characteristics.

She began to write works at university after meeting the children's author Hwang Sŏn-mi . She graduated in 2006 and wrote three stories in the same year for which she received awards.

The German translation of the international bestseller Wandŭk for young people was published by Baobab Books in Basel at the end of May 2020 . The FAZ reviewer discovered a "wonderful Bildungsroman" in it.
