Hwang Sun-mi (* 1963 in Hongsŏng ) is a South Korean children's author.
Life
Hwang Sun-mi was born in Hongsŏng in 1963. Coming from a poor background, she was unable to attend middle school. However, she got the key to the classroom from an understanding teacher and was able to read books and study independently. So she made it to high school and then studied creative writing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts , Kwangju University and the Graduate Faculty of Chung-Ang University . She made her debut as a writer relatively late in 1995. She graduated from university without taking part in writing competitions. It wasn't until she raised her two sons that she started publishing. She is a professor at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.
Hwang Sun-mi writes about everyday problems that children face and sees her books as a source of courage and hope to overcome these problems. The author gets inspiration for her stories from her two sons. Her publications include animal stories, fantasy stories and realistic stories about the school, although she had never attended middle school herself. Well known in South Korea is her story Always Trouble with Jonko (나쁜 어린이 표), which takes sides for children who have been treated unfairly by teachers. Another famous book by Hwang Sun-Mi, The Day I Hide My Journal (일기 감추는 날), is about a child who fears inconvenience when teachers, friends, and family read his school diary and learn the truth about his thoughts . But since he doesn't want to lie, he hides his diary (Korean children have to keep a kind of diary as their daily homework at school). Hwang has sold over a million books and her works have been translated into numerous languages. They also served as models for puppet theater, musicals and cartoons. The story The chicken that dreamed of flying (마당 을 나온 암탉) was made into an animated film in 2011 and was a box-office hit in South Korea.
