Gijsbert de Leve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gijsbert de Leve (born August 25, 1926 in Amsterdam , † November 19, 2009 ) was a Dutch mathematician who dealt with stochastic (Markov) decision-making processes and was considered one of the founders of Operations Research in the Netherlands, especially stochastic operations research.

De Leve obtained his diploma in mathematics and physics in 1954 from the University of Amsterdam and received his doctorate in 1965 under Jan Hemelrijk at the University of Amsterdam (Generalized Markovian Processes). He was also a student of Johannes Runnenburg . In 1965 he became associate professor. In 1974 he became professor of operations research at the University of Amsterdam. In 1991 he retired.

He was particularly concerned with the application of operations research in business. With Jacob Willem Cohen (1923–2000) he established the field of stochastic operations research in the Netherlands.

His doctoral students include Jan Karel Lenstra (* 1947), former director of the CWI , Awi Federgruen (Columbia University) and Henk Tijms (University of Amsterdam).
