Jan Hemelrijk

Jan Hemelrijk (born May 28, 1918 in Arnhem ; † March 16, 2005 ) was a Dutch mathematician who dealt with statistics and was professor of statistics at the University of Amsterdam .

Hemelrijk received his PhD in 1950 from David van Dantzig at the University of Amsterdam (Symmetrical Tests and Other Applications of Neyman and Pearson's Theory, Dutch). Afterwards he was van Dantzig's assistant at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in Amsterdam, where he was in charge of statistical advice (for example, this was reflected in the report of the Delta Commission 1960, Part 3, on storm surge risks). From 1952 he was professor at the University of Delft and from 1960 as successor to van Dantzig professor in Amsterdam.

He was editor of Statistica Neerlandica (the Vereniging voor Statistiek en Operationele Research) and held the first statistics series in the Teleac television program in 1969/70.

His doctoral students include Gijsbert de Leve and Willem van Zwet .
