geography
location
The Schimberg rises in the Südichsfeld on the western edge of the Westerwald. Within the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal nature park, viewed clockwise, it lies between the villages of Martinfeld in the north-west, Großbartloff in the south-east, and Ershausen in the south-west; the district town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt is about 10 km north-north-west.
The mountain is bordered by the valley of the Rosoppe in the west and the Wolfentalsbach in the southeast, in the northeast the Martinfelder Schimberg (see section mountain tops ) south of the Wagental flows smoothly into the plateau of the Westerwald. The elevations of the Heuberg ( 429.6 m ) and the Eichberg ( 425.3 m ) above Wilbich adjoin the ridge to the south .
Hilltops
The approximately 4 km long and 2 km wide ridge consists of several mountain peaks - sorted from north to south with heights in meters (m) above sea level:
- Martinfelder Schimberg (470.6 m), southeast of Martinfeld
- Summit with Schimberg summit (473.4 m), just south of the Martinfelder Schimberg
- Kuppe (458.4 m), in Junkerholz
- Südkuppe (457.1 m), between Ershausen and Großbartloff.
The northernmost and southernmost mountain tops are considered to be Schimberg in the narrower sense.
History and origin of name
The first documentary mentions for 1577 are Schiemberg , 1610 Scheünberg and 1675 Schinnberg . The name of the Schimberg is derived from the barns that used to stand on the mountain. The dialect was then shortened from Schinnen - (mountain) to Schim - (mountain).
Below the Martinfelder Schimberg there is evidence of a settlement Ehrenborn or also earsborn , which was described as desolate as early as the 15th century . A manor or farm (with the barns mentioned) built on the Schimberg had to be abandoned because of the scarcity of water on the water-permeable shell limestone soils .
Nature and sights
The Schimberg, which is mostly covered with deciduous forest, is only used for agriculture at its foot, even on steeper slopes. Numerous hiking trails lead from the surrounding villages into the mountain area. From individual vantage points, such as the Erhauser window , there are distant views of the southwestern Eichsfeld and the northeast Hessian mountainous region. Other sights include the Karl Spitzenberg monument above Martinfeld, the cross built in 2012 on the Martinfeld window and the Guteborn chapel above Ershausen.
Parts of the Schimberg belong to the FFH area Ibenkuppe-Thomasbrücke-Ostlicher Westerwald and the bird sanctuary Südliches Eichsfeld .
