The Rosoppe is a right-hand or northern tributary of the Frieda in the Eichsfeld district in northwest Thuringia ( Germany ).
course
The Rosoppe runs exclusively in Obereichsfeld and in the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park . The source is located on the southern outskirts of Flinsberg below the waiting mountain (516 m). Another spring arm rises in the Keffergraben below the Ibenkuppe .
The Rosoppe flows through first in a southerly direction Martinfeld and further in a south-southwest direction Ershausen. Then it touches the district of Wilbich and flows west of Geismar into the Frieda, about 300 m downstream the Rode, coming from the northwest, flows into the Frieda. Both rivers drain and shape the landscape of the Rosoppe-Frieda hill country within the south dike field.
To the south of Martinfeld and Ershausen, areas of the Rosoppen lowlands are designated as temporary flood plains.
Tributaries
The following streams flow to the Rosoppe:
- nameless brook (left), coming from Klüschen Hagis
- Schlossbach (right), coming from the direction of Bernterode at the Grabenmühle (in the upper reaches also Rosenbach and Nesselgraben)
- Singelbach (left), coming from Guten Born in Ershausen
- Krombach (right), in Ershausen from the direction of Krombach
- Tiefenbach (right), in Ershausen from the direction of Misserode
- Wildebach (left), between Ershausen and Geismar from Wilbich
geology
The source area is located on the edge of the Obereichsfelder Muschelkalkplatte and with its small tributaries forms narrow erosion valleys. After about a kilometer, it runs briefly in the upper and then in the middle red sandstone . Between Ershausen and Geismar it breaks through again shell limestone of the Eichenberg – Gotha – Saalfeld fault zone .
Watermills
Numerous water mills were operated on the Rosoppe :
- Ascheröder mill between Flinsberg and Martinfeld
- Lawn mill, village mill, ditch mill in Martinfeld
- Village mill and dining mill in Ershausen
- Griesmühle between Ershausen and Geismar
The ditch mill and the dining mill are still in operation today.
Origin of name
The rosoppe was first mentioned in writing in 1609 as rosopsse . The word part -ros comes from Old and Middle High German and stands for horse or horse. The origin of the defining word -apa is not clear, a Germanic origin is preferred to a Celtic origin.
Transport links
The state road 1007 runs along the entire Rosoppe from Heiligenstadt to the state border with Hesse . A cycle path from Martinfeld to Ershausen and from the Wilbich district to the confluence with the Frieda has been completed. The old embankment can be used for the missing section south of Ershausen.
