The Rosoppe-Frieda-Hügelland is a hilly landscape in the districts of Werra-Meißner and Eichsfeld , in the border area of Hesse and Thuringia ( Germany ). It is a right-hand part of the Lower Werrabergland on both sides of the Werra between Treffurt and Hedemünden on the Werra tributary Frieda .

Geographical location

The Rosoppe-Frieda-Hügelland is a red sandstone hilly landscape that extends north from the eastern edge of the Eschweger Basin or from the Schwebda-Jestädter Werraaue of the Werra near Frieda .

The landscape is still bounded by the shell limestone plates of the Gobert in the west, the Upper Eichsfeld around the Höheberg in the north, the Westerwald in the northeast and the Wanfrieder Werrahöhen in the southeast. Eschwege is located directly on the southern edge and the Eichsfeld district town Heilbad Heiligenstadt is approx. 8 km from the northern edge.

Natural allocation

According to the classification of the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany , the Rosoppe-Frieda-Hügelland is assigned as follows:

The parts of the Rosoppe-Frieda hill country to the west of the Rode are to be regarded as a slope and orographic part of the Gobert , while the southeastern part represents the north-east roof of the Plesse of the Wanfrieder Werrahöhen .

According to the alternative classification of the Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology (TLUG), the Thuringian portion of the Rosoppe-Frieda hill country is counted as part of the Werrabergland – Hörselberge unit (part of the southern eichsfeld hill country).

Geology and landscape

The hilly landscape of the Rosoppe-Frieda-Hügelland consists mainly of red sandstone , which extends from the layer of the limestone rims of the northwestern edge of the Thuringian basin to the Werra valley. Only individual mountain peaks, such as those of the Hülfensberg and the Schloßberg, are made of shell limestone.

Along the Eichenberg – Gotha – Saalfelder fault zone , the small ridge of the Misseröder limestone ridge (no. 358.51) west of Ershausen is delimited as a separate landscape. The soils of the flat, undulating basin in the north (east), which is sealed off by the limestone ridge, are very loess-rich . While the southern areas of the Frieda-Rosoppe-Hügelland on both sides of the Frieda-Unterlauf have large areas of forest, the central western part immediately east of the central Gobert and the basin landscape in the north (east) are mainly used for agriculture.

The landscape is drained by the Rosoppe , Krombach and Rode rivers , which come from the north and flow into the Frieda at Geismar and the Werra at Frieda .
