Großtöpfer is a district of Geismar in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

location

Großtöpfer is located west of Geismar in the Frieda valley on the state roads 1007 and 2030 in the hilly terrain of the southern dike field near the border with Hesse . To the southeast, the Hülfensberg towers over the district and the region.

history

On December 20, 1195, the former village was first mentioned in a document. Those in charge of the village assume October 22, 1375. The area around Großtöpfer was swampy during reclamation and covered with a larger body of water. The Greifenstein Castle , which is located near the site was mentioned in 1397 when she was captured and partially destroyed. In 1465 the von Töpfer sold the village with all its accessories (desertification, forests, water, pastures) to the von Hanstein, but the archbishops of the Electorate of Mainz were the lords . In the 15th and 16th centuries, Großtöpfer was a court, first that of von Töpfer and then that of Hanstein . From 1534 the place of jurisdiction was united with the von Hanstein court in Schwobfeld , at the end of the 18th century it was again the place of jurisdiction for the Hanstein general court over Großtöpfer, Lehna and Schachtebich . In 1735 the residents built a church, which they then rebuilt in 1827. In 1949 the community built a cultural center. The idea of the Hülfensberg has always been in the minds of the residents around the mountain, as it was once settled by the ancestors in times of need and is regarded as a sanctuary. 165 inhabitants lived in the district in 2009.

A peculiarity of this small place is the historical development in that a Catholic church (1902) was built next to the Protestant church . In 1897 there was also a Protestant and a Catholic school.

From 1914 to 1947 Großtöpfer was connected to the Heiligenstadt – Schwebda railway with its own train station. The cessation of railway operations and the dismantling of the tracks took place in 1947 by order of the Soviet military administration .

Knight family von Potters

Great potters were the seat of a medieval knight of potters or topphers. In 1360 we call a Marolt von Tophfern and 1364 von Dopphirn. In 1465 Merolt, Hermann, Heinrich and Hans von Topphern sell the village of Töpfer with all its accessories to Heinrich von Hanstein . In Siebmacher's coat of arms, other noble families with the same name are also mentioned.

Worth seeing

On the road between Großtöpfer and Frieda there is an escort stone (an old border column) and an old historical boundary stone right next to it. The varied landscape around the Hülfensberg (448 m) invites you to numerous hiking destinations, including the former inner-German border and today's Green Belt , as well as on the Schloßberg (442 m) with the Greifenstein castle ruins .
