The Wanfrieder Werrahöhen are a small, at the Keudelskuppe 485 m high ridge in the districts of Werra-Meißner , Unstrut-Hainich and Eichsfeld in the border area of Hesse and Thuringia ( Germany ).

The name was only introduced in 1969 in the Kassel sheet of the Handbook of Natural Spatial Structure of Germany and describes a natural area there . Better known by name are the mountain names Keudelskuppe and Plesse as well as Karnberg as a name for the orographically separated southern mountain range.

Geographical location

The mountain range, which extends east of the Werra in the form of a funnel opening to the west around the course of the Gatterbach s flowing into Wanfried, is about 10 km long in north-north-west-south-south-east direction and 2 km in the north and up to 4 km wide in the south. It is orographically bounded by the Werra in the west, the Frieda in the north, the Rosebach in the northeast and the Heldrabach ( Haselbach ) in the south and southeast. The eponymous city of Wanfried is located on the western edge, Treffurt in the south. According to the natural spatial demarcation, the Haselbachtal and the Adolfsburg mountain north of Treffurt are also included, which orographically represents a western spur of the Falkener Platte. As a result, the natural area also has a share in the Wartburg district .

The nearest larger cities are Eschwege about 10 km west of the northern part and Mühlhausen about 14 km east of the eastern edge. The two places are connected via the B 249 , which passes the Gatterbachtal from the Werra valley upstream and crosses the ridge in the middle in a west-east direction.

The inner German border once ran over the entire altitude .

Natural allocation

The Wanfrieder Werra Heights are naturally allocated according to the Kassel sheet as follows:

However, as they are separated from the core plateau of the main unit 483 by the Upper Friedatal area and also directly accompany the Werra below Treffurts , they are also included in the Lower Werrabergland , among others by the BfN .

The Wanfrieder Werrahöhen border in the west on the Treffurt-Wanfrieder Werratal , in the north-west on the Rosoppe-Frieda-Bucht , in the north-east on the Upper Friedatal area and in the south-east on the Falkener Platte .

geology

The Wanfrieder Werrahöhen geologically form a transition area between the mighty Muschelkalk plateaus from (Kern-) Obereichsfeld , Hainich and Falkener Platte to the geologically multilayered and relief-rich Lower Werrabergland , which buffers the Muschelkalkplatten against the red sandstone of the Fulda-Werra-Bergland in the west. They have the character of witness mountains of the northwestern edge plate of the Thuringian Basin , although less pronounced than in the north-west near Gobert , from whose core landscape they separate the Upper Friedatal area on the Eichenberg-Gotha-Saalfeld fault zone .

The waste to the side valleys of the Werra or to the Werra itself takes place in a craggy layer . The Plesse rock face , created by a rock fall, and the waterfall in Elfengrund are geologically interesting .

To the northwest, the transition to the red sandstone of Rosoppe-Frieda-Bucht is rather gentle. On the Hülfensberg , which extends the ridge line from Plesse and Keudelskuppe, there is again island-like shell limestone.

mountains

The Wanfrieder Werra Heights are divided into 2 parts by the small Gatterbach tributary :

  • the northern ridge of the Plesse
    • Keudelskuppe (484.7 m), Eichsfeld district, west of Hildebrandshausen
    • Plesse (479.5 m), Werra-Meißner district, east of Wanfried (with the Plesseturm)
    • Konstein (455.2 m), Werra-Meißner district, east of Wanfried
    • the Hülfensberg (448.2 m), which adjoins further to the northwest , already belongs to the Rosoppe-Frieda-Bucht
    • likewise the Eichenberg (300 m at the south summit), which protrudes directly into the mouth of the Frieda
  • the mountain plateau of the Karnberg to the south
    • On the Delle (461.0 m), Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis, west of Katharinenberg
    • Karnberg (approx. 450 m), in the border area of the Werra-Meißner and Unstrut-Hainich districts, southeast of Wanfried
    • Muhlienberg (447.4 m), Werra-Meißner district, north of Altenburschla
    • Mainz heads (approx. 440 m), Werra-Meißner district, south-east of Altenburschlas
    • Fritzkopf (411 m), Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis, west of Wendehausen

South of the Heldrabach- Unterlauf also the narrow ridge of the Adolfsburg (378.7 m), Wartburgkreis, is still counted as a natural area.

Nature and landscape

In the ridges and on the steep west and south slopes, beech forest dominates , while the northeast of the Karnberg plateau has been cleared. To the south, this is strongly divided by several tributaries to the Haselbach (also Heldrabach ) and already belongs to the Treffurt city forest.

Protected areas

Due to the diverse flora and fauna, the area of the Wanfrieder Werrahöhen belongs to several protected areas - including a planned and an existing nature reserve - whose designations are limited to one of the two federal states:

  • Hesse
    • FFH area Plesse-Kohnstein-Karnberg (562 ha)
      • NSG Plesse-Kohnstein (198 ha, first designation 1960)
      • Bird sanctuary rock cliffs in the Werra-Meißner district (smaller portion of 464 ha - the larger part is in the Gobert )
      • (Incline towards the Werra completely in the FFH area Werra and Wehrertal )
  • Thuringia
    • (since 2009 completely in the LSG Eichsfeld )
      • NSG Keudelskuppe – Wacholderberg (149 ha, planned)
      • FFH area of Treffurt city forest north of Treffurt (352 ha)
      • FFH area Adolfsburg – Bornberg – Sülzenberg (148 ha; orographically complete and natural area with the eastern half already Falkener Platte )

The nature conservation project "Green Belt Eichsfeld-Werratal" leads the heights as shell limestone heights east of Wanfried as a separate project area.

history

As a result of the division of Germany within Germany after 1945, numerous goods in the area of the Wanfrieder Werrahöhen on the Thuringian side were initially expropriated and then demolished as part of border security - such as the former Keudelstein manor and the Scharfloh and Karnberg suburbs .
This also applies to the former Mühlhausen – Treffurt railway line , which had to cross the border twice south of the Karnberg.

Of the former border installations, the Katharinenberg border tower can still be visited as a memorial and an agent lock.
