The geological subsoil consists of light shell limestone , which is particularly evident on the Plessefelsen, which was formed by a rock fall in the 17th century . The Plesseturm observation tower is on the mountain .

geography

location

The Plesse rises on the southwest edge of the Upper Eichsfeld . It is located to the right of the Werra on the border between the city of Wanfried (Werra-Meißner district; Hesse) and the municipality of Südeichsfeld (Unstrut-Hainich district; Thuringia), which is also the border of the Frau-Holle-Land geo-nature park (Werra Valley, Meissner . Kaufunger Wald) in the southwest to the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park in the northeast. Around the mountain are the core town of Wanfried in the west-south-west and the villages Döringsdorf ( district of Eichsfeld ) in the north-west, which belongs to the municipality of Geismar , as well as Lengenfeld unterm Stein and Hildebrandshausen (Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis) in the north-east, both of which belong to the municipality of Südeichsfeld . The district town of Eschwege (Werra-Meißner district) is 9.5 km to the west.

Keudelskuppe-Plesse-Konstein mountain range

The mountain is part of the Keudelskuppe-Plesse-Konstein ridge . This extends in a north-west-south-east direction from Döringsdorf to Gatterbach , a small tributary of the Werra on the right. The eastern boundary forms the valley of the Rosebach , which flows into the Frieda at Lengenfeld . The highest point is the Keudelskuppe ( 484.7  m ) at the northwestern end, in the southeast the Konstein ( 455.2  m ) joins. Other elevations on the edge of the ridge are the Große Hopfenberg ( 394.1  m ) and the Wacholderberg ( 400.2 m ) on the eastern roof and the Mittelberg (hillside location  up to about 300  m ) in the direction of the Werra valley.

Natural allocation

According to the natural classification in the Kassel sheet of the Federal Institute for Regional Studies, the mountain is part of the Wanfrieder Werrahöhen natural area (No. 483.22), an offshoot of the western upper area field (483.2) and part of the main unit northwestern edge plates of the Thuringian basin (483) in the main unit group Thuringian basin (with edge plates) (47/48). To the south and west, the landscape falls into the subunit Treffurt-Wanfrieder Werratal (358.1), part of the main unit Unteres Werrabergland ( Unteres Werraland ; 358) within the main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (35).

According to the classification of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the Plesse is assigned to the Lower Werra Valley (35801).

Origin of name and history

The name Plesse is mentioned for the Eichsfeld in 1358 as vor deme plessen . A derivation of blassa or blesse for a light background where the forest has been cut is described. The name is identical with Plesse Castle in the upper Leine valley near Göttingen, which became the headquarters of the Lords of Plesse . Gottschalk III. von Plesse was deployed at the neighboring Stein Castle and built a border fortification over the entire ridge from 1251–1259 on behalf of the Mainz electors . The southern Konstein had already been fortified by the Celts or Teutons, a small castle complex was built on the Keudelskuppe and the fortification was carried out via the Fackental (Vokemal) to Stein Castle. In addition, settlements ( Kywobsdorf or Kubsdorf , Wintersdorf, Burgerode) were created in the vicinity of the castle , but they were already desolate in the Middle Ages. The borderline over the ridge remained in place for centuries, including the inner-German border and today's Thuringian-Hessian state border.

The Plesse and the neighboring mountains are popular excursion and hiking areas with a varied landscape and nature. The former inner-German border ran directly over the ridge and is now part of the German Green Belt . The premium trail P5 Plesse runs over the Plesse .

Geologically interesting is the Plessefelswand , formed by a rock fall on January 24, 1640 southwest of the hilltop , as well as two cave-like crevices in the shell limestone, the Taterlöcher .

Plesseturm

About 350 meters south of Plessegipfels stands above the small Plessefelsen the 1963/64 built Plesseturm . From its viewing platform, among other things, the Werra valley with Wanfried and Eschwege, the north-east Hessian mountainous region (especially the Hohe Meißner ) and the southern Eichsfeld can be seen. Due to weather damage, the 22-meter tower has been closed since 2016.
