The Lutherse Kerk in Middelburg

The Lutherse Kerk is a former Evangelical Lutheran church in Middelburg in the Dutch province of Zeeland . The church is used by an Old Catholic parish and is Rijksmonument under number 29713.

history

In 1617 a warehouse at Suikerpoort was handed over to the Middelburg Lutherans, which they were allowed to convert into a church. After a fire in 1673, the building was restored and enlarged. In 1737 the decision was finally made to build a new church. The baroque hall church , which was subsequently built from brick, was built for the Middelburg Lutherans based on designs by Jan de Munck and consecrated in 1742. The most striking feature of the externally simple hall structure is the portal in the Louis quatorze style. Inside, the church was given an elaborate stucco decoration by Antoni Traull and Giovanni Antonio Gioveni. The magnificent organ front houses the organ from the old church, which was built by Johannes Duyschot from Alkmaar in 1707. Efforts by French occupation troops under Napoleon Bonaparte to convert the church into a hospital could be averted by the parish.

In 2004 the Middelburg Lutherans joined the newly created United Protestant Church in the Netherlands together with the local Reformed congregation . The Lutherse Kerk was initially only used for special services, such as B. traditionally for the celebration of the holy Easter Vigil . The Old Catholic Church has been using the building since 2014.

organ

The organ was built in 1707 by the organ builder Johannes Duyschot. Over time, the instrument has only changed slightly. The additions mainly concerned the Rückpositiv , where the Mixtur and the Dulciaan were last added in 1964. The slider chest instrument has 17 stops on two manuals . The pedal (range: C – c 1 ) is attached. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
