The mountain Adolfsburg has a summit height of 378.7  m above sea level. NN and lies in the area of the city of Treffurt in the northwestern part of the Wartburg district . The mountain consists of shell limestone and is part of the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park .

The mountain, which is wooded on the west and north side, is located at the junction of the Falkener Platte and the Wanfrieder Werrahöhen , near the border between Thuringia and Hesse . The south side, which slopes steeply to the Werra valley, shows large rock areas. A western branch is the Töpferberg .

The mountain is named after a wooden siege castle built there by the troops of the German King Adolf von Nassau . Close to the east is Normannstein Castle on a spur on a central slope ; it was once the target of the siege. Below the Normannstein Castle, the Normannstein spring emerges as a heavily pouring spring .

A medieval trade route runs over the mountain as a ridge path, which divides at the “Steinernen Mann” (old border and path markings). The eastern branch leads in the direction of Grenzhaus Heyerode , into the Vogtei Dorla and to Mühlhausen . The path branching off to the north shortened the path to the Treffurter Stadtwald, Gut Karnberg and the neighboring towns in the Südeichsfeld .

On the mountain top there is a refuge with a viewpoint over the city of Treffurt and the Heldrastein border area between Hesse and Thuringia . The hiking trail to the summit leads through a hundred-year-old cherry plantation belonging to the people of Treffurt. The gnarled trees hardly bear fruit, but are preserved as landscape elements and as a meadow orchard that is valuable in terms of nature conservation . A new construction of the plantation under the aspect of fruit cultivation would be unprofitable.
