The desert is located approximately 1.5 kilometers west of Wendehausen in the west of the Unstrut-Hainich district near the state border with Hesse . Other neighboring towns are Treffurt in the south and Wanfried in Hesse in the northwest. history

The former border tower northwest of the Vorwerk Karnberg

The place was probably mentioned for the first time in 1349/50 in the loan book of the Landgrave of Thuringia as Kraynburg . There is no evidence of a medieval fortification. Karnberg was later a Vorwerk of the manor Kleintöpfer and belonged to the Ganerbschaft Treffurt . Kleintöpfer with the Vorwerk Karnberg was owned by the noble von Baumbach family until 1888 , after which it belonged to the manor owner von Scharfberg vom Kalkhof near Wanfried. From 1943 until the end of the Second World War , cultural goods were stored here.

After the end of the war, the Karnberg was still used as a children's holiday camp. In 1952 the Vorwerk was demolished because of its proximity to the inner German border . The site was located in the strictly guarded protective strip immediately adjacent to the border facilities that were gradually being expanded. As of June 3, 1964, 599.8586 hectares area of Karnberg and small pottery with the Treffurter city forest out of town Treffurt in the community Wendehausen and was out of the loop Eisenach in the county Mulhouse umgemeindet.

Current condition

Some hiking trails from the surrounding villages lead to the desert. The former estates are still used for agriculture. There are still some old linden trees and cellar remains at the former farm. At the former border patrol road is still an observation tower of the border troops of the GDR .
