history

The Prussian district of Mühlhausen i. Th. Was assigned to the state of Thuringia in the Soviet occupation zone after the Second World War . The state of Thuringia had been part of the GDR since 1949. During a first regional reform in the GDR , the district of Mühlhausen was enlarged to include the previously independent city of Mühlhausen and the municipalities of the districts of Langensalza and Sondershausen .

On July 25, 1952, there was a comprehensive administrative reform in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states lost their importance and districts were founded. Parts of the district of Mühlhausen were given to the new districts of Langensalza , Eisenach and Worbis . The district of Mühlhausen was formed from the remaining district area and was assigned to the newly formed district of Erfurt . The district seat was in the city of Mühlhausen.

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Mühlhausen district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district of Mühlhausen was awarded to the re-established state of Thuringia in October 1990. During the district reform in Thuringia , it was absorbed into the new Unstrut-Hainich district on July 1, 1994.
