history

On July 25, 1952, a comprehensive district reform took place in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states lost their importance and new districts were formed. The Artern district was newly formed from:

  • the municipalities of Bilzingsleben, Bretleben, Donndorf, Etzleben, Gorsleben, Hauteroda, Heldrungen, Hemleben, Kannawurf, Langenroda, Nausitz, Oberheldrungen, Reinsdorf, Sachsenburg and Wiehe from the dissolved district of Kölleda ,
  • the communities Bottendorf , Roßleben and Schönewerda from the reduced district of Querfurt ,
  • the communities Artern / Unstrut, Gehofen, Heygendorf, Kalbsrieth, Mönchpfiffel, Nikolausrieth, Ritteburg, Schönfeld and Voigtstedt from the smaller district of Sangerhausen ,
  • the communities of Bad Frankenhausen / Kyffhäuser, Borxleben, Esperstedt, Göllingen, Günserode, Ichstedt, Oldisleben, Ringleben, Rottleben, Seega, Seehausen, Steinthaleben, Udersleben from the smaller district of Sondershausen

and assigned to the newly formed Halle district .

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Artern district. After the reunification of the two German states, the Artern district became part of the re-established state of Thuringia in 1990 and was almost completely incorporated into the Kyffhäuserkreis during the district reform that came into force on July 1, 1994 . Only the communities of Bilzingsleben and Kannawurf came to the Sömmerda district .
