On February 5, 985, King Otto III. his court in Berge in Helmegau to the abbess Mathilde von Quedlinburg . A few days earlier, on January 28, 985, this document had already been issued, but not signed. Berga was part of the Kelbra office , which had been administered jointly by the Counts of Stolberg and the Counts of Schwarzburg since the 16th century and which came to the Merseburg administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony after 1816 . Together with Görsbach , Schwenda , Uftrungen , Bösenrode , Rosperwenda and Thürungen, Berga has a share in the Siebengemeindewald , which was given to the communities by Count zu Stolberg for the rescue of his son in 1604.

On February 22, 1945, the express train D 190 Leipzig-Cologne was attacked by US low- flying aircraft with on-board weapons in the Bergaer Kuhried . 41 passengers were killed. In the Nordhausen hospital, 21 seriously injured people died from their gunshot wounds: a total of 62 fatalities.

On April 12, 1945, five Wehrmacht soldiers who had taken up a defensive position near the train station were “shot out” by US troops and shot after they were captured on the Ohl property.
