Benndorf is a municipality in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . The community belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Mansfelder Grund-Helbra , which has its administrative seat in the community of Helbra .

geography

Benndorf is about ten kilometers northwest of Lutherstadt Eisleben on the foothills of the southern Harz on the edge of the Mansfeld Mulde and the Mansfeld copper slate mining area.

history

The settlement of Benndorf, a farming village, was first mentioned in a document in 1121. Characterized by agriculture and copper slate mining, Benndorf developed into a handsome place. There were two estates here in the 12th and 13th centuries. During the 30 Years War, Benndorf was completely destroyed. The later reconstruction benefited from the copper shale mining and the fertile arable soil.

At the end of the 19th century, the place had around 1700 residents. At that time there were 131 buildings including a church, school, restaurants and syringe house. With the great time of the Mansfeld mining until the 20th century, Benndorf experienced the high point of its development. The relocation of mining to the Sangerhäuser Revier after 1964 and the need for workers around Hettstedt, however, led many residents to migrate to these places.

Of the previous 4886 inhabitants (1960) only 2811 people lived there in 1990; meanwhile (2018) there are around 2100. Today a lot of elderly people live here.

The mayor is Mario Zanirato (non-party) and works on a voluntary basis. He was first elected on February 4, 2001 and re-elected in 2007 and 2014. Before him, Gerhard Blume (Die Linke) was mayor.

Benndorf comprehensive school

The main railway connection of the village is on the Magdeburg-Erfurt railway line from Klostermansfeld station , which is located in the Benndorfer area. In Benndorf there are two historical railways, the Wipperliesel to Wippra and the Mansfeld mine railway to Hettstedt. Four bus routes run through the village, namely to Annarode , Eisleben , Hettstedt and Helbra .

The state road L 225 between Helbra and Klostermansfeld runs through the village and separates it into an older and a newer district (the former miners' settlement). To the federal highway 80 , which connects Eisleben and Sangerhausen, it is about six kilometers to the south.

67 smaller companies shape the place today. There is a library, two parcel shops, smaller bars, a butcher, a farm shop, a flower shop, a textile and sports shop, hairdressers, cosmetics, a car workshop and other craftsmen's businesses. A general practitioner and a physiotherapist also have their practices here. There is a sports field with a home for athletes and a children's playground in the village. Benndorf also has a volunteer fire brigade.

The energy supply is mainly provided by enviaM / Mitteldeutsche Energie AG.

environmental Protection

In the municipality of Benndorf, the topics of energy policy, environmental and climate protection play an important role with the use of solar energy. In this context, it received the European Energy Award in February 2018. The community and the Benndorfer housing association (which owns around 800 apartments) are particularly committed to the sustainable construction and renovation of local residential properties. The aim is to use as little energy and resources as possible. This applies above all to the completely renovated miners' settlement. In addition, operating resources are to be reduced, the service life of products and building structures improved and substances and materials that are harmful to health avoided.

A first local school was first mentioned in 1573. The Gottfried-August-Bürger-Gymnasium existed until 2007 and was closed that year. Around 50 teachers and other employees work at today's secondary school. In grades 5 to 10 there are around 530 students and 20 mostly handicraft-oriented working groups. The school maintains student internships and elective courses; it has connections to partners from the regional economy. In addition, cultural and intercultural fields of activity and development are offered, such as a song group, a theater group, an art group, collaboration on the school website and the editing of the school newspaper. The school has its own photovoltaic system with a solar laboratory; it is connected to the local bio-heating plant.

There is also the day care center "Pusteblume" of the district association Mansfelder Land eV of Volkssolidarität with 130 places and the day group "Gutsmäuse" of the DKSB MSH eV with homework supervision, support hours, parent work, therapy options and events.

Church of St. Catherine

St. Katharina Church (Benndorf) with cemetery.

In 1823 the Protestant St. Catherine Church was built; today's building stands in the same place as it.

Museum courtyard

An agricultural property first mentioned in 1682, which has belonged to the Benndorf community since 2000 and has been designed as a museum courtyard through the commitment of the Benndorf Home and Support Association. It was rebuilt several times after the 17th century. As the “yard of the trades”, it is dedicated to the history of the Mansfeld region. The main topics are mining, metallurgy, agriculture and regional archeology and geology. So far, an old mine tunnel, a museum apartment from 1900 and a historic oven with grill house have been restored. In an open-air area, next to a herb garden, there is an animal enclosure for domestic animals from the region, including those kept by miners.
