About this picture

Gerbstedt is a small town in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

landscape

Gerbstedt is located in the northeastern district of Mansfeld-Südharz on the Mansfelder Platte , a landscape with many flat hills in the Harz foreland . This slopes gently to the north. There are two main cuts in the municipality: the valley of the Schlenze and that of the Fleischbach. The latter is particularly steep at Bösenburg. Both valleys flow into the Saale valley west of Friedeburg. The landscape there with its steep slopes is impressive. At 72 m above sea level, the deepest point in the municipality is in the Saale breakthrough near Rothenburg . In addition, these cuts are still divided into sub-cuts, at least after rainy storms, rivulets flow through most of them. The highest point is on the 241 meter high hill Sickberg west of Thondorf . Other hills are called z. B. Sehringsberg (near Helmsdorf ), Langer Hu (between Ihlewitz and Gerbstedt), Warthe (near Gerbstedt), Lauschhügel (south of Welfesholz) and Kuhberg (near Adendorf ). Some hills are also named after types of water, such as the Seeberg and the Teichberg near Zabenstedt. But there are also hills with the same name, such as Goldberg, which is represented three times (once near Rottelsdorf and twice near Lochwitz ).

Waters

The largest body of water in the municipality is the Saale , which flows through the municipality over a length of 3 kilometers. Because of a breakthrough in the Saale, a small area beyond the Saale also belongs to the municipality. There are several streams in the municipality. Most of them are drained by the Schlenze . The Griftbach Rüsterbach , Grift , Apfelborn and Wickengraben near Siersleben in the west of the unified municipality (see Griftbach ) should be mentioned . There is also the Fleischbach near Freist with its several short, water-rich spring streams near Bösenburg , for example the Fleischgraben from Rottelsdorf . There is also the Lobach between Gerbstedt and Zabenstedt and the Pfeiffhausener Bach. There are also several periodically drying rivulets in the area of the municipality. These include, for example, the Alte Wipper between Thondorf and Klostermansfeld , which is also often called Regenbeck , the Sohlbach near Helmsdorf , which has not been flowing continuously since 1826, and the brook in the village of Welfesholz that drains to Hettstedt. Some rivulets can also be found at Freist.

There are very few swamps and lakes to be found in the municipality. But there are several man-made pools. The few natural ones were mostly filled in (for example the Lochwitz sea holes). The largest standing water is an oxbow lake of the Saale with a size of five hectares east of Friedeburg on the border to the Saalekreis . The second largest standing body of water is a rectangular, approx. 200 by 30 meter large artificial basin in the Schlenze valley near Heiligenthal. To the northwest of Gerbstedt are the Lodderstedter ponds. A small swamp is located on the southern outskirts of Augsdorf.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are Arnstein , Hettstedt and Mansfeld in the west, Könnern ( Salzlandkreis ) in the north, Salzatal and Wettin-Löbejün (both Saalekreis ) in the east; and the lake area Mansfelder Land and the Lutherstadt Eisleben in the south.

Expansion and use of the urban area

Gerbstedt is a medium-sized municipality. It covers a total of 102.02 km² with an east-west extension of 16 and a north-south extension of 8 kilometers. The land use is shown in the table below. In it, traffic routes and bodies of water were assigned to the area that encloses them. This also applies to smaller forests.

history

Ruins of the desert of Lodderstedt

The area of the city of Gerbstedt has been settled for a long time, as many finds attest. There was even a circular moat south of Siersleben . In addition, burial mounds or entire grave fields were excavated. One of these exists on the northern slope of the Schlenze between Helmsdorf and Polleben , a large number of stone box graves were found here, the dead were all buried with their heads facing south. Some graves have been reconstructed, they are hidden on the Sehringsberg, ten meters from the upper edge of the field. There was also a princely grave of the Aunjetitz culture at the Brosowski shaft , which was examined in 1906 by the historian Hermann Großler .

Many old villages existed along the streams and rivulets, which were much more numerous before the construction of the key tunnel. Most of them can only be found as desert , there are ten around the core city alone. These are called: Dankendorf , Derlingen , Dresewitz , Lodderstedt , Mummesdorf , Nienstedt , Nisselsdorf , Polingen , Reindorf and Rote Welle . The name of another desert northeast of the city center is unknown. Another desert town called Dörlitz is located near Freist.

On the basis of a territorial change agreement, the municipal councils of the communities Augsdorf (on June 8, 2009), Friedeburgerhütte (on: May 18, 2009), Hübitz (on May 20, 2009), the city of Gerbstedt (on May 19, 2009), Ihlewitz (on May 14, 2009), Rottelsdorf (June 9, 2009), Siersleben (June 10, 2009), Welfesholz (June 3, 2009) and Zabenstedt (June 23, 2009) decided that their communities should be dissolved and become one new community with the name Stadt Gerbstedt are united. This contract was approved by the local authority and came into force on January 1, 2010. On January 24, 2010, the communities of Freist , Friedeburg (Saale) and Heiligenthal were incorporated.

City structure

The municipality of Gerbstedt is divided into 12 localities (municipality-like units), these can be divided into 25 districts, the actual places. mayor

From 1994 to 2019 Siegfried Schwarz was the mayor of Gerbstedt, until 2010 of the smaller municipality and from 2010 of the unified municipality. For health reasons, he resigned from office in November 2019.

On February 2, 2020, Bernd Hartwig, who was not part of the party, was elected as the new mayor with 56.09% of the vote in the first ballot. According to media reports, the uncertain future of the three primary schools in the urban area was the most important issue in the election campaign.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Gerbstedt

The coat of arms was approved on December 7, 1998 by the regional council of Halle . The new town of Gerbstedt applied for the continuation or takeover of the coat of arms of the old town of Gerbstedt, this was approved by the district on June 17, 2010.

Blazon : "In silver a black-haired saint in natural colors in a blue robe with a green palm frond in his right hand, below covered with two pole-like semicircular shields, the right one in gold a black hexagram with a green clover leaf, the left one divided by red and silver, the left hand rests on the upper left corner. "

The coat of arms refers to seal representations from the 16th century. In the oldest seal from 1404, St. Stephan is still depicted with his hands raised in prayer, while the depiction of the martyr's palm (palm branch, palm frond) has been known since the 16th century. St. Stephen is one of the seven deacons of the early Christian community in Jerusalem and the first martyr of the Christian church (stoning). St. Stephan is the patron saint of the Halberstadt monastery and at the same time the patron saint of the women's monastery and the city church of Gerbstedt. The hexagram in the right shield is probably the old place symbol, a hall mark and the green shamrock a symbol of the Benedictine monks who venerated Stephen. The left shield is the coat of arms of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg , whose Archbishop Günther granted the town of Gerbstedt market rights and which Gerbstedt town and monastery only sold to the Counts of Mansfeld in 1541 .

The city's colors are blue and white.

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Lutz Döring from Erdeborn.

Town twinning

A ring town partnership has existed since 1991 with the municipalities of Grefrath in North Rhine-Westphalia and Frévent (Northern France), which have been partnered since 1966 . The contacts are cultivated in particular by the "Association of Friends of Frévent and Gerbstedt". Every year at Whitsun, mutual visits between the partner cities take place.

Culture and sights

Friedeburg Castle

In the Friedeburg district is the Friedeburg Castle , a former castle of the Counts of Mansfeld that was converted into a castle .

Churches

In most parts of the community there is a church, and there is rarely a second one in the village. This is the case in Gerbstedt and Siersleben; in these places there is a younger Catholic church in addition to the old Protestant church building. Most of the churches in the parish have a sturdy tower with a clearly rectangular floor plan. The following churches exist in the parish:

The Church of St. Wenceslas in Thaldorf
  • St. Moritz in Adendorf
  • St. Annen in Augsdorf
  • St. Michael in Bösenburg
  • St. John in Elves
  • Holy Cross Church in Freist
  • St. Bonifatius in Friedeburg
  • St. Johannes in Gerbstedt
  • St. Andreas in Siersleben
  • the Catholic Church of Siersleben (profaned)
  • St. Wenzel in Thaldorf
  • St. Georg in Thondorf
  • The Lady Chapel by Welfesholz
  • The village church of Zabenstedt

There were other churches in the past, such as the monastery church of Gerbstedt, and some of the deserted areas had small churches.

Museums

In Gerbstedt there is a city museum with various exhibits from the older and more recent past. On request, it is possible to visit a medieval underground cellar under the market square.

In summer, the steam-powered museum trains of the Mansfeld mining railway run through the districts of Siersleben and Thondorf .

Infrastructure

traffic

Major roads

Road routes in the municipality are:

  • the federal highway 180 , which only runs 500 meters to the south on the municipal area
  • the state roads (only the course in the community, or the first location outside is called when the roads is to continue [...] written)
    • 72 (crossing Thälmannschacht - Siersleben - Welfesholz - Sandersleben - [...])
    • 151 ([...] - Belleben - Gerbstedt - Helmsdorf - Polleben - [...])

    • 158 (Friedeburg - Adendorf - Friedeburgerhütte - Zabenstedt - Gerbstedt - Welfesholz - Hettstedt - [...])

Public transport

There is no Deutsche Bahn station in operation in the entire municipality . The HHE , which opened up the area with the lines Halle – Hettstedt (in today's municipality the stations Rottelsdorf, Heiligenthal, Gerbstedt and Welfesholz) and Gerbstedt – Friedeburg (in today's municipality the stations Gerbstedt, Zabenstedt, Friedeburgerhütte, Zabitz and Friedeburg) Gradually closed from 1962 to 2002, first the Gerbstedt – Friedeburg line in 1962, then the section between Heiligenthal and Schochwitz in 1968 , then the Gerbstedt-Heiligenthal section in 1998 and finally the last section in the Mansfeld-Südharz district between Hettstedt and Gerbstedt in 2002. An association is trying to reactivate the route. Since 1993, no trains have left the Siersleben train station, which is on the railway line from Magdeburg to Erfurt . Only on the narrow-gauge line of the Mansfeld mine railway occasionally do trains to the Thondorf and Gleisdreieck Siersleben stops. The main public transport within the community are the buses of VGS Südharz . The nearest train stations are in Hettstedt, Klostermansfeld (both Berlin – Blankenheim line ), Sandersleben (Anh) (Berlin – Blankenheim line and Halle – Vienenburg line ) and Eisleben ( Halle – Hann. Münden line ).
