The Halle Klaustor – Hettstedt railway line was a single-track, non-electrified railway line in Saxony-Anhalt. The railway line, licensed as a small railway, was built by the Halle-Hettstedter Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (HHE), which also operated until its nationalization in 1945/49.

history

On May 30, 1896, passenger traffic officially began on the approximately 45-kilometer route from Klaustor station in the west of Halle via Salzmünde Süd, where there was no track connection to the Teutschenthal – Salzmünde state railway , and Gerbstedt to Hettstedt in the Mansfeld region . Freight trains have also operated here since August 1, 1896. There was a track connection from Halle Klaustor to the Halle port railway . However, people had to use the tram or walk to the city center .

From October 2, 1899, a branch line ran from Gerbstedt towards Friedeburg . In 1922 a main workshop was set up in Nietleben .

Shutdown

The line was shut down in sections over a period of more than thirty years. Passenger traffic between Halle and Heiligenthal ceased on March 11, 1968. For almost thirty years trains still ran from Hettstedt to Heiligenthal; then from 23 May 1998 it was the end of the line in Gerbstedt. The remnant remained until September 23, 2002 passenger traffic, which was last served by vehicles of the Kreisbahn Mansfelder Land GmbH .

Heidebahnhof (2012)

Freight traffic between Halle Klaustor and Nietleben ended on September 28, 1968 because the route hindered the construction of the satellite town of Halle-Neustadt . The line to Hettstedt was connected from Merseburg via Holleben . But even when the middle section of Schochwitz- Heiligenthal was abandoned in the spring of 1968, continuous traffic had become impossible.

The route between Nietleben and Dölau served the new S-Bahn from October 26, 1971 , passenger traffic between Dölau and Schochwitz no longer took place. Since August 1, 2002, the S-Bahn has only run to Halle-Nietleben, the former Halle (S) West station. The section between Halle-Nietleben and Dölau is no longer in operation.

Freight traffic from Halle to Schochwitz was operated until June 1, 1991, on the remaining Hettstedt – Heiligenthal section until 1994.

Recommissioning plans

The Friends of the Halle-Hettstedter Eisenbahn e. V. has made it its business to revive the HHE. Former sections are to be put back into operation as a historic railway line. The first work steps were undertaken in the area between Halle-Nietleben and Halle-Dölau and in Gerbstedt train station. The planned reactivation of this section, however, contradicts the plans of the city of Halle (Saale) to create a footpath and cycle path between the city districts after the old track system has been removed.

The German regional railway in 2008 received a valid operating license until 2058 for the section Halle-Nietleben-Hettstedt. However, operations have not yet started.

On April 28, 2017, the section between Halle Heidebahnhof and Halle-Dölau was put back into operation after being refurbished.
