Salzmünde is a village and seat of the municipality of Salzatal in the Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt , Germany .

geography

Salzmünde is about seven kilometers west of Halle (Saale) . The Salza flows into the Saale here . With an average annual precipitation of 436 mm, Salzmünde is one of the places with the lowest precipitation in Germany.

Local division

In addition to the main town of the same name, the surrounding villages of Benkendorf, Gödewitz, Neuragoczy, Pfützthal, Quillschina and Schiepzig also belong to the village of Salzmünde.

history

Salzmünde is the eponymous place of discovery of the Salzmünd culture of the Neolithic funnel beaker culture . Between 2005 and 2008 excavations took place on an area of 3.5  ha , making the area the largest excavation site in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to 140 skeletons, the floor plans of two post houses and a palisade as well as a wooden grave were found.

In 979 the place Salzmünde was first mentioned in a document. From a castle ( Hüneburg ), which was probably founded in the 9th century , hardly any remains have survived after its destruction in 1433 (?). Around 985, Salzmünde belonged to the County of Wettin . Salzmünde Castle and its accessories were sold to the von Schraplau family in 1378 . In 1442 the Counts of Mansfeld Friedeburg and Salzmünde bought Meissnian groschen for 4,000 shock (240,000) . In the period that followed, Salzmünde and the surrounding towns of Benkendorf, Gödewitz, Pfützthal and Quillschina belonged to the Mansfeld county . They were administered by the Oberamt Friedeburg , based in Pfützthal in the Schraplau district. In the dispute between the Archbishop of Magdeburg and the city governor from Halle, the Friedeburg office was attacked in 1433 and Salzmünde Castle was robbed and destroyed.

When the county of Mansfeld was divided in 1738/80, the Oberamt Friedeburg received the share that the Duchy of Magdeburg received. The Duchy of Magdeburg, on the other hand, emerged from the Archbishopric of Magdeburg in 1680 when it came under Brandenburg-Prussian rule. The place Schiepzig in the Giebichenstein office of the Magdeburg Saalkreis already belonged to this . With the Peace of Tilsit in 1807, the places around Salzmünde were incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia and assigned to the Halle district in the Saale department. The Mansfeld villages Salzmünde, Benkendorf, Gödewitz, Pfützthal and Quillschina came to the canton of Fienstedt and Schiepzig in the Saalkreis to the canton of Halle-Land . After Napoleon's defeat and the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, Napoleon's allied opponents liberated the area in early October 1813.

During the political reorganization after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the places around Salzmünde were attached to the Merseburg administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony in 1816. The former Mansfeld towns of Salzmünde, Benkendorf, Gödewitz, Pfützthal and Quillschina were assigned to the Mansfeld Seekreis , and Schiepzig to the Saalkreis again. The work of Johann Gottfried Boltze (1802–1868) completely changed the appearance of the previously small village. Numerous industrial buildings were built within a few years, including a brick factory in 1832, which was considered the largest in Prussia, in 1847 one of the first sugar factories in the province of Saxony and in 1863 a water mill that has since been demolished.

The place experienced a renewed boost in development when the agricultural entrepreneur Carl Wentzel from neighboring Langenbogen married one of Boltze's heiresses in 1907. Streets have now been named after both of them. On July 1, 1950, the places Benkendorf, Gödewitz, Pfützthal, Quillschina and Schiepzig were incorporated into the municipality of Salzmünde, now in the Saalkreis. This remained on July 25, 1952 in the now smaller hall circle in the Halle district .

Until the new formation of the unified municipality of Salzatal on January 1, 2010, Salzmünde was an independent municipality and the seat of the administrative association Westlicher Saalkreis founded in 1994 . The last mayor of Salzmünde was Gerd Kalbitz.

History of Bad Neuragoczy

In the middle of the 19th century, the German surgeon Dr. Wilhelm Hermann Runde described the healing effects of the bromine and iron springs in the Saale valley north of Halle (Saale), which are based on a geological disturbance. In 1847 a park with a bathhouse and drinking facility was built on the opposite bank of the Saale from Brachwitz . The name "Bad Neuragoczy" is based on the similarity of the water quality with the well-known Rakoczi spring in Bad Kissingen . The spa was inaugurated on July 30, 1851. The health resort continued until 1920. After that, the eight springs were used to produce mineral water and lemonade. During the GDR era, the mineral water factory was nationalized and incorporated into the Halle brewery as Plant IV. VEB Brauhaus Halle has been bottling mineral water since 1965 under the name “neura Mineralbrunnen”. The production was stopped in 1988 due to excessive nitrate pollution of the spring water. The art and marketing initiative “Werk 8” has been offering the old mineral water site since 2015 as a place for special celebrations.

The A 143 currently under construction runs west through the municipality. It cuts through the community between the districts of Salzmünde and Schiepzig. Local citizen and nature conservation associations ( NABU ) are suing the route. There is currently a construction freeze for this section.

The state road L 159 runs through Salzmünde between Halle-Neustadt and the B 180 near Klostermansfeld . From here, in the town of Salzmünde, the state road L 173 to Bad Lauchstädt and the district road K 2127 in the direction of Wettin .

In 1946 a ferry across the Saale connects the Neuragoczy district with Brachwitz . A pontoon bridge connected the two places until they were destroyed in 1945.

Salzmünde was the end point of the Teutschenthal – Salzmünde railway line, which was inaugurated in 1888 and closed in 1962 . In the district of Benkendorf, the Salzmünde Süd train station (formerly named after the neighboring town of Cöllme ) was on the Halle Klaustor – Hettstedt railway line , which was in operation for passenger transport until 1991 and for freight transport until 1991, and from which freight wagons rose after the Teutschenthal line was closed Road scooters were transported to the former Salzmünde train station.

Buildings

The townscape of Salzmünde is essentially shaped by the buildings Boltzes - especially along Johann-Gottfried-Boltze-Straße - and Wentzels - especially in the housing estate Am Rathaus and the harbor. The outstanding preserved buildings include the tower on the Schlossberg, the warehouse at the harbor, the combined school and prayer house , the town hall and the brickworks . There are also other historical buildings such as a manor house , seed breeding station , train station or hospital.
