Lieskau is a place of the unified municipality Salzatal in the Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany).

geography

Lieskau is located approx. 4 km west of Halle (Saale) and borders the Halle-Dölau district and the Dölauer Heide .

history

In 1182 the village was first mentioned as Lezcowe in a deed of donation to the Neuwerk monastery in Halle (Saale) . The settlement was originally located further to the west and is of Slavic origin. Lieskau was already producing lignite in the 14th century .

Lieskau was on the border with the county of Mansfeld and belonged to the Giebichenstein office in the hall circle of the ore monastery of Magdeburg . In 1680 the place came with the Saalkreis to the Duchy of Magdeburg under Brandenburg-Prussian rule. With the peace of Tilsit in 1807 Lieskau was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia and assigned to the Halle district in the Saale department. The place came to the canton of Halle-Land . After Napoleon's defeat and the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, Napoleon's allied opponents liberated the Saalkreis in early October 1813. During the political reorganization after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Lieskau was attached to the Merseburg administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony in 1816 and assigned to the Saalkreis.

Until the new formation of the unified municipality of Salzatal on January 1, 2010, Lieskau was an independent municipality in the administrative community of Westlicher Saalkreis with the associated district of Waldheil. The last mayor of Lieskau was Harald Schubert.
