Paul Holdefleiß (born September 15, 1865 in Salzmünde , † March 15, 1940 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German agricultural scientist with encyclopedic interests. He is one of the leading co-founders of agricultural meteorology .

Life path

Paul Holdefleiß, son of an economics inspector, brother of Friedrich Holdefleiß , first completed an apprenticeship for several years in a sugar factory and on several beet farms. In 1890 he began studying agriculture at the University of Wroclaw . During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Breslau . In 1891 he moved to the University of Halle (Saale) and received his doctorate there in 1894 with a dissertation on the importance of crude fiber for animal nutrition . As Julius Kühn's assistant , he continued to deal mainly with questions of animal nutrition and feed quality in the following years . In 1897 he completed his habilitation in Halle with an experimental thesis on the composition of straw and chaff types .

Holdefleiß worked as a university professor in Halle until his death. After five years as a private lecturer, he was appointed associate professor for agriculture and head of the crop production and meteorology department of the Agricultural Institute of the University of Halle. From 1920 he worked as a full professor at the newly founded Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding.

Teaching and research

Holdefleiß was a representative of the idea of a universal agricultural science in the sense of Julius Kühn . Initially, the focus of his scientific work was in the areas of animal nutrition and breeding. After 1900 he turned more to plant cultivation and other areas of plant production theory. For a long time he paid special attention to plant breeding . He gave lectures on this subject and in 1908 published a book on " Agricultural Plant Breeding ". In collaboration with Theodor Roemer , he promoted the breeding of protein-rich wheat varieties and improved the methods for determining the quality of bread grain.

As a young lecturer, Holdefleiß recognized the high value of longer-term weather forecasts for agriculture. His first agrometeorological contribution " The importance of meteorology for the farmer " appeared in 1899 in "Fühling's Landwirtschaftlicher Zeitung". In the following three decades Holdfleiß dealt particularly intensively with the influence of weather on the yields of agricultural crops. At the same time he tried to familiarize farmers with the latest findings in meteorology. Numerous magazine articles and several book publications served this goal. His main scientific work in this field is the book “ Agrarmeteorologie. The dependency of crop yields on weather and climate ”. Holdfleiß is one of the leading co-founders of agricultural meteorology .

Of his book publications, “ Der Wiesenbau ” (1919) and the “ Introduction to the Terms of Agriculture ” (1923) should also be emphasized . He published several comprehensive overview articles on topics from the field of plant production theory in the journal "Kühn-Archiv". In other articles he also dealt with social problems in agriculture. He has repeatedly honored Julius Kühn's life's work , including as co-editor of a commemorative publication on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Honors

In 1906 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
