Friedrich Holdefleiß (born October 7, 1846 in Bennstedt near Halle (Saale) , † October 28, 1919 in Breslau ) was a German agricultural scientist with research interests in the fields of agricultural chemistry , plant production theory and animal breeding .

Live and act

After five years of practical work on various farms, Friedrich Holdefleiß, brother of Paul Holdefleiß , studied agriculture at the University of Halle (Saale) and received his doctorate there in 1874 with a dissertation on the digestibility of phosphorite through composting. He then went on a study trip to England and Scotland and in 1876 published a book about it under the title " Agricultural travel sketches from England and Scotland ". This was followed by assistant years with Julius Kühn at the Agricultural Institute of the University in Halle and with the agricultural chemist Max Maercker . In 1877 he completed his habilitation in Halle with an experimental study on the valuation of potatoes .

In 1878 Holdefleiß took over the management of the agricultural chemical test station of the Central Agricultural Association in Breslau. From 1881 to 1892 he worked as an associate professor at the University of Breslau . He gave lectures on all areas of plant production theory , but also on farm management and animal breeding. His research focus during this time was in the field of fertilization. Noteworthy is his book " Examinations on Stallmist " , published in 1889 .

In 1892 Holdefleiß was appointed full professor and director of the Agricultural Institute of the University of Breslau. After the institutional breakdown of agricultural sciences carried out by Kurt von Rümker at the University of Breslau, Holdefleiß became director of the newly founded institute for agricultural animal production in 1896. Since then he has devoted himself almost exclusively to animal breeding. He traveled to numerous animal breeding regions in Germany and in Eastern European countries. He was particularly interested in the development of cattle breeding in Silesia. He strongly promoted academic teaching and research in the field of animal production. Since 1892 he has led 30 doctoral students to doctorate.
