Wilhelm Zorn (born August 12, 1884 in Memmingen , Upper Swabia, † November 13, 1968 in Munich ) was a German agronomist , animal breeding and grassland scientist .

Live and act

He studied agriculture in Weihenstephan near Freising at the Technical University of Munich and at the University of Breslau . At the latter he received his doctorate in 1911 with a zootechnical topic in the agricultural department of the Philosophical Faculty for Dr. phil. This was followed by three years as an assistant to Emil Pott in the zootechnical institute of the TH Munich and then four years to Friedrich Holdefleiß at the Institute for Animal Production Studies (later animal breeding and dairy farming) at the University of Breslau. Here, Zorn completed his habilitation in animal breeding in 1919 and became a full professor and director of this institute as early as 1920 - following Holdefleiß. From 1904 he was a member of the Corps Donaria zu Freising-Weihenstephan .

In 1923 he also founded and directed the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute for Animal Breeding in Tschechnitz (1936–1945 Kraftborn ) near Breslau. Here, Zorn was primarily concerned with the management of grassland as a crucial prerequisite for better nutrition for cattle and sheep. As a main initiator of the grassland movement, he published numerous articles on these connections in the 1920s. At the institute in Breslau and in Kraftborn, young scientists under Zorn's direction were occupied with questions of applied heredity research (Ruth Gruhn, Hans Friedrich Krallinger) and created the basis for the establishment of a new chair in genetics .

At the end of the Second World War , Zorn had to leave Breslau and settle in Bavaria. In 1947 he became head of the Bavarian State Institute for Animal Breeding in Grub (now Poing) near Munich - later the Institute for Constitutional Research - and remained so until 1954. At the same time, he was a lecturer from 1947 to 1955 and took over lectures in animal breeding as well as the institute management for the exempted full professor of the Veterinary Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

One of Zorn's main merits is the establishment of the animal breeding library at Ulmer Verlag (Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg), for which he himself wrote many titles for the animal species horse, cattle and pigs in several editions. In their concentrated presentation, they were a valuable aid for students of agriculture and veterinary medicine (in West and East Germany) for several decades. In addition, Zorn published the "Journal for Animal Breeding and Breeding Biology" for over 20 years. From 1934 to 1957 he was chairman of the German Society for Zuchtungskunde (DGfZ) and was then elected honorary chairman. In 1944 he received the Hermann von Nathusius Gold Medal from the DGfZ.
