Live and act

Emil Pott, son of a court music director, attended secondary school in Graz , learned practical farming on a farm in Lower Austria and studied at the Agricultural Academy in Proskau from 1871 . In 1873 he moved to the University of Göttingen . In 1874, he was there with the dissertation "On formation and individual potency" Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked for 18 months as a research assistant to Ewald Wollny in the agricultural department of the Technical University of Munich . From the end of 1876 he was also involved in the cultivation of hops . He became co-editor of the “Allgemeine Brauer- und Hopfenzeitung”. From 1877 to 1890 he was President of the "German Hop Growing Association". He published numerous articles on hop cultivation and in 1883 a small paper on the culture of brewing barley .

In 1879 Emil Pott received the Venia legendi for plant and animal production theory at the agricultural department of the Technical University of Munich . Since 1890 he held the title of associate professor . In 1904 he was appointed full professor for animal breeding at this university. The focus of his entire teaching and research activities was in the areas of animal breeding , animal nutrition and animal feed science .

Emil Pott has mastered the art of presenting the results of research in a clear and comprehensible manner. Many treatises appeared in agricultural calendars and in compilations. His most extensive work is the handbook "The agricultural feedstuff" published in 1889 , which saw a second edition as a three-volume edition (1904, 1907, 1909). He became best known in the professional world with his book "The Formalism in Agricultural Animal Breeding" from 1899. In this "combat pamphlet" he fiercely advocated assessing animal breeding according to performance and introducing state performance tests for cattle, sheep and pigs. Despite massive attacks by traditional animal breeders, this book has made a significant contribution to the more appropriate assessment of the tasks of agricultural animal breeding.

As a lover of the alpine mountains, Emil Pott was one of the most enthusiastic members of the German and Austrian Alpine Club . With essays enthusiastic about nature, he has sustainably promoted alpine tourism. As the son of a musician, he was also musically gifted and a valued guest in Munich's music and artist circles. He was also an honorary member of the international foundation of the Mozarteum in Salzburg .
