The Bavarian State Agency for Agriculture (LfL) is a state authority in the division of the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry and is based on the Weihenstephan campus in Freising . It is an authority directly subordinate to this state ministry and sees itself as the knowledge and service center for agriculture in Bavaria , which it summarizes under the slogan "research, promote, educate".

LfL is represented with 27 locations across the country. The most important locations are the Freising Campus , Grub-Poing and Munich. Since 2017 a branch of the LfL has been set up in Ruhstorf adRott , near the town of Pocking in Lower Bavaria .

history

The state institute was established on January 1, 2003. The state institute for soil culture and plant cultivation, the state institute for animal breeding, the state institute for nutrition, the state institute for business administration and agricultural structure, the state institute for agricultural engineering and the state institute for fishing as well as the experimental farm administrations in Achselschwang, Freising and Grub have merged. On January 1, 2004, the teaching and research institutes for animal husbandry Almesbach, Kringell, Schwarzenau, Spitalhof and Achselschwang as well as the main and state stud Schwaiganger were integrated.

The first president of the state institute was Hans Schön . After his death in 2004, Jakob Opperer became the second president in August 2005, who built up and further developed the state institute.

tasks

The state institute is active in the fields of agroecology , plant cultivation , plant protection , animal breeding , animal nutrition , fishing , agricultural engineering and animal husbandry , nutrition and agricultural economics . It conducts application-oriented research in these areas; it is also responsible for carrying out experiments and model projects as well as inventory and long-term observations. Her field of activity includes the development of technical principles for agricultural policy decisions as well as the creation of technical principles and standards for agricultural administration and advice. Another area of responsibility is vocational training in individual agricultural professions.

The state institute is also responsible for implementing agricultural law and coordinating and controlling the departments for food, agriculture and forestry in the enforcement of the law on plant and animal production and the regulation of milk quotas.

As part of its tasks, the State Institute works with comparable institutions, universities, technical colleges, authorities and institutions as well as associations, organizations and companies in the economy and participates in national and international bodies.

In 2015, the Bavarian Supreme Audit Office criticized the state institute's hop breeding and research. These are predominantly in the interests of the brewing and hop industry and are not an original state task. At least the brewing and hop industry should contribute appropriately to the costs of hop breeding and research.

Services and advice

The LfL is active in applied research; specifically, the LfL networks the various research disciplines (soil, plants, animals, market as well as ecology and economy) and develops interdisciplinary knowledge. The research results of the LfL flow into practical solutions and strategies; there is close coordination with practitioners, associations, other research institutions and authorities.

As a result of this collaboration, LfL offers its target groups solution-oriented applications and IT programs, monitoring , forecasts and warning services, results of variety tests and detailed information.

  • Monitoring and warning service

The recommendations of the official plant protection warning service in Bavaria are based on monitoring programs that record the occurrence of diseases and pests and on forecast models that calculate their risk of infection or spread.

Information on the regional occurrence of diseases and pests, tips on plant cultivation and plant protection as well as the local contact person for production-related questions can be obtained from the offices for nutrition, agriculture and forestry (with the plant cultivation specialist center) nearby.

  • Agricultural Meteorology Bavaria

With the agricultural meteorological measuring network, the Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture offers current weather data for Bavaria as well as forecasts and monitoring programs for agriculture, viticulture, horticulture and beekeeping. In addition, the visitor will find an irrigation service and a weather forecast there.

  • Variety trials and advice

Research on the breeding and quality of plants is a central task of the LfL. We support farmers and consultants with advice on varieties of almost all cultures. Tests carried out in-house are the basis.

Laboratory companies that carry out analyzes in the field of sewage sludge and biowaste must go through a notification procedure. The process includes all steps from sampling and performing the analyzes to the preparation of the results reports. AQU is the notification body according to waste law for Bavaria.

  • Interactive applications

The LfL provides the farmers and the agricultural advisory service as well as all citizens with a range of free EDP programs, calculation data and background information for calculating the profitability of agricultural production processes.
