Residential areas

Residential areas in this natural district are located within the western part of the historic Klaustorvorstadt, which the city of Halle calls so-called City quarter was designated. This applies in particular to Hafenstrasse and the residential area at Sophienhafen . Hafenstraße has buildings from the Wilhelminian era on the eastern side of the street. An eight-story residential building was built on the western side of the street, and a senior citizens' facility is planned.

The new residential area on the street Am Sophienhafen was built in 2014. A high storage facility was converted into a residential building here; single-family houses and four townhouses were built.

In Mansfelder Strasse, only the northern side of the street between the Saale and the Rennbahnkreuz belongs to the Saaleaue district. There are mainly renovated commercial buildings here.

In the former Gut Gimritz on the Peißnitzinsel is now the nursing home "Am Mühlenhof".

Local recreation and leisure area

With the Mittlerer Saaleaue, the district includes the most important inner-city local recreation area, which is also an important part of the green area around the Saale floodplain. It is therefore designated as a landscape protection area. Here you can find the Peißnitzinsel with a variety of leisure facilities, including playgrounds, an open-air stage, the park railway and restaurants. The adjoining Ziegelwiese, an inland island between Stromsaale and Mühlgraben, is a popular leisure area with a pond and an 80 meter high fountain . The Gimritzer Park with its valuable old trees is also part of this local recreation area.

On the so-called Saline Island, an inland island surrounded by the Saale and the Elisabethsaale, you will find the park by the Saline, the Halloren and Saline Museum , the Saline swimming pool and the Saline outdoor pool. There is also the wood yard, a former site of brine extraction and the old storage area for wood and coal for salt production. The new planetarium is to be built from the gasometer of the former gas works on the Holzplatz, built in 1891 .

The last section of the so-called Hafenbahntrasse , a tourist pedestrian and cycle path that starts at the main train station , runs across the Saline Island from the port railway bridge to the Sophienhafen, where a new jetty for pleasure craft - the city port of Halle (Saale) - has been built .

The city harbor, which is open from April to October, has power connections at the berths, sanitary facilities and its own parking spaces and is looked after by a harbor master.

The powder pastures in the south of the Saline island have been a protected part of the landscape since 1994, named after a former powder mill from the 16th / 17th century. Century. From 1895 to 1901 the area was designed as a park with a ring pond around the Pfaueninsel.

The Halle horse racing track with its imposing grandstand building erected in 1913 is also located in the Saale floodplain.

Waters

The district is primarily determined by the Saale with its side arms (Elisabethsaale, Wilde Saale, Gerbersaale, Mühlgraben), which flow through the urban area from south to north, forming river loops and inland islands.

There are several bodies of water to the south of the racetrack: “Canal” and “Old Canal” are the remains of an unfinished shipping project from the 20th century, to the west of which there are two former gravel pits. The canal has been used as a regatta course since the 1960s; the Saaleaue gravel pit, which consists of the north and south trough, serves primarily as a swimming lake for the residents of Neustadt . Both the canals and the gravel pits are also popular fishing waters.

Between the Peißnitz Island and the Saline Island, opposite the Sophienhafen, there is the Gimritz lock , a ship lock on the Saale federal waterway near Saale - km 92.30.

Nature reserves

There are two designated nature reserves in the area of the district:

Others

The up to 1.5 km wide arched floodplain landscape of the district is flooded every year for several weeks. To protect against flooding, the "Passendorfer Damm" was raised in 1935; the federal highway 80 runs parallel to this.

On October 17, 1971, the actor Peter Sindermann , stepson of the GDR politician Horst Sindermann , died in a plane crash in the river Saale.
